My Dad's friend has this bike, and he's interested in it. It's a Trek 5000 carbon frame with a mix of Ultegra and 105. The hubs are 105, but the rims are OLD School Aurora's. The guy said it was worth $4000 back in the day, I think it's worth maybe $800. It's also got a 1" headset and a FUNKY stem. It needs new tires, a seat, a tape. What is it worth? And for that price should he be looking at something new?...

Thank You!

Mike

Mike You could buy one brand new for $1700 in 1995. In the condition you describe, maybe $500,iand if it has an aluminum fork, even less. It's also 8 speed and current stuff is 9 and 10. Early frames had problems with BB shell separating from the frame, which was fixed in 1998 and later ones.

If your dad has 800 dollars to spend, I'd pass up the Trek and look for something new.

Thanks Guys... I was afraid you'd say that! He's all exited about it too, don't know how to break it to him. He may very well be happy with that bike for a while though (it only has like 50 miles on it - it's just old, but new). It'd be great if it were free, but the guy wants money for it, so the question becomes how much? Seriously, like $500 huh?

The mix of 105 and ultegra does not sound right, and the 50 miles is most likely bogus.Maybe $500 if it fits well and everything works and you do not have to spend alot on getting it in shape and can do it yourself rather than possibly getting gouged by LBS.

It sounds weird, but it's true...

The guy actually owns a local sporting goods store a good friend of the family). He took the bike home, rode it once, and parked it in the garage. I already gave it a tune up and test rode it. just had to degrease and oil the chain (which still had the originall wax coating on it), and true the rear wheel. It IS otherwise, brand new - drivetrain is imaculate... But, one brake lever/shifter is 105 and one is Ultegra. Ultegra R. Der./ 105 F. Der. Ultegra triple.

What should I tell my dad?

The 5000 as originally sold was all 105.Probably hard to go wrong if you can get it for around $500.

$500 is the magic number then, I'll tell my pop and then we'll see if we can make it happen - otherwise we'll just get 2 new bikes from an LBS (I'm getting one too!).

Thank You for all the info...

Mike
