Touring - Traveling w/your Boxed Bike & Panniers to Scotland

Hi Forum,
I am travelling to Scotland to do my first tour this May. Two weeks of riding around the country with the wife. I have purchased two of the Hard Cases from Performance Bikes for traveling and I was wondering;

1) Does anyone who uses a hard case pack your bike w/pannier attached to the bike?

2) Has anyone tried to pack ALL of their gear into such a case? (Panniers, Clothes, etc.)

3) Any airline problems w those cases?

I haven't use a hard pack case, but friends of mine have. I think you're likely to have to pay, at least with US air carriers, due to the size of the case. They generally charge you now if the 3 dimensions of any piece of luggage add up to more than 62 inches.

Bring some good rain gear (though when I biked in Scotland, I had possibly the driest weather there during the entire 20th century).

Here's a suggestion for your other gear. Get a large, lightweight duffel bag (REI sells them). Put your panniers and other stuff in the duffel bag. Roll-up the empty duffel bag and leave it in your bike case while you're touring.

I'd like to know what the cycling in Scotland is like! I want to go there to visit the old family haunts! :D

Just done a tour in Scotland in Feb, it was fantastic such wilderness, beauty. The law is you can camp anywhere, even on private land, as long as it is not close to any dwelling, even though its always good to let people know you are there. It puts a friendly face to strangers. Its worth getting maps from sustran as they have teamed up with forestry commision to provide off the road routes. I have spent days riding totaly off the road and not seeing a soul. Even though its high up its not hilly as compared to riding in Yorkshire or Devon/Cornwall. As for travelling with hard case, never done it always gone with the bike and panniers, never had a problem, some one suggested on this forum, that if the baggage handlers see its a bike then they are carefull, if its a solid piece off luggage then it can get thrown around. I do hope the weather is fine in May as it's a bit early really. We have just had the heaviest snowfall of the year just when we were hoping for Spring. That said you could be in luck as in Scotland you never know what the weather will be like. Bring your raingear with you in any case.
