Bicycle Mechanics - Chain question???

Any one use the SRAM 971 ???
any problems with it like breaking or early fatigue with proper maintenance of course?

I have the SRAM 971 on my road bike. It's great - have had absolutely no problems so far. Had to take off a few links to make it fit, that's all.

Never had problems with it or the previous generation. There was talk on Velonews a while back about issues relating to use of Simple Green, but none of our customers have reported such an issue, and I know several that use Simple Green.

it deteriorates the steel, which causes micro-fractures close the the rivets/rollers.. thus causing chain breakage

i didn't ask about an eco friendly cleaner or anything...
I use what i use for cleaning & it is not simple green for anything..lol
I use Acetone,strep or petrol, but that is immaterial.

I had breakage like this on a SRAM pc-68 chain, low mileage, on a street bike with brand new cassette/chainrings. Chain never saw simple green and was regularly lubed with Dumondtech.

After breaking the chain examination revealed 4-5 other outer plates cracked from the pin outwards all in the same spot where the chain was stamped with the logo. Did they stamp the links too hard and weaken the plates? Sure looked like it to me.

Send the chain back to SRAM for a replacement. They will be more than interested in examining the chain for failure modes.

I contacted LBS about this they said "SRAM has not intended to use pc-68 older cogsets (campagnolo 6 speed stuff , NOS super record crank , NOS regina oro freewheel) , no warantee......"

Easy there. If you dealt with SRAM on a regular basis, you'd know there's some good customer service agents there and some not so good ones. I have one that's the only guy I'll talk to, even if it means waiting a while. Example: dude lost the red knob off the Juicy brake lever. First dude I talk to says sure, it costs $15 and I'll send you one. I said no thanks and called back to my usual guy. He sends two of 'em out no charge.

Not saying this is necessarily the case, but let's not rush to judgement without all the facts.

A regular columnist on the weekly RoadBikeRider E-mail newsletter said his shop has stopped carrying SRAM chains since they have experienced an inordinate number of breakages in MTB service. He admits MTB's are harder on chains than road bikes but says the trend is clear. He also said that SRAM recently moved chain production to Portugal and that's when the quality problems began.

As am I, thanks. Since it apparently wasn't as obvious as I thought, the answers the LBS receives are very much dependent upon the SRAM rep they talk to.

That may be, but the point I was trying to make is that it's foolish to assume the LBS did so without all the facts. I specficially said so in my first post, even.

AFAIK production has been in Portugal for a long time. Possibly as long ago as when sachs where making them there before sram acquired them.
