Hello,

I'm new to the forum.. My brother is into Mountain Biking.. He typically does Down Hill racing and general trails and stuff.

I'd like to purchase some new safety equipment for him... knees, elbows, maybe chest/shoulders?

What brand / line do you recommend?

Where's the best place to buy mountiain Biking accessories like these?

Thanks so much,
KC

How big is he going. Personally next year I am going to have

1 - full faced helmet (I really want my face intact and have seen to many accidents ripping the jaw off)

2 - chest / back / shoulder - nice to have but not really required unless he is going huge. If he is doing dh he should grab it. Living in Whistler I have seen and heard about more serious accidents just because of lack of good armour on the dh sections. One mistake can and does kill when not wearing protection.

3 - Shin - first armour I bought...the best thing I did. My shins were hamburger at the beginning of the season

4 - Elbow pads. I don't land on my elbows but a lot of peoples first instincts are hands out so this is good too.

661, roach, hoots (local company to North Shore), fox all make good armour. The shin pads Kleins is selling ROCK!. A couple of companies make those pads and they are very durable and very protective. :)

I should have said hear of 2 and I have seen 1. The two I heard of were the result of a missed table top jumps on Whistler mountain (2 different runs). 1 of those unfortunate people ended up dying, the other in critical condition with full face grafting. The one I personally saw was the result of a missed dirt jump and his face smashing into his stem. All I know is I want my face intact in 10 years...:)

As they say, it's all fun and games until someone gets their jaw ripped off.

Maybe this is why I'm starting to prefer road riding. lol ;)

Its pretty rare...and if you consider the number of people coming down the mountain this year, thats a pretty small number. One of those injuries (the second one) was caused by a fork snapping in two on a landing...

Thanks for all the replies!

I'm looking to spend a few hundred bucks.. maybe 3-400 or so.. He is my brother after all ;)

I'll look into those brands mentioned too..

Does anyone have any suggestions for online stores that specialize in Bike gear?

Thanks in advance.

I go with Klein on this one. Especialy if your brother races. Get him the full suit.
If he needs pads for just riding the local trails with an occasional race then you could get him separate shin/arm/chest protection and then that way he could decide what to where depending on the trails. $400 can get you alot of good protection.
