Bicycle Mechanics - Poor man's crown race remover?

Is there such an impliment and advisable to use? I picked up a used 1" Cannondale slice fork with steel steerer. I am putting it on a foul weather bike with a Cane Creek headset and I tried to reuse the race that is on the fork. It does not snug up nicely but there is no binding or slop. Could I dremel it off ? I am afraid to heat it because of it proximity to carbon and paint. I tried prying it but no luck. I know, take it to the shop, but......

You should be able to pry it off with a screwdriver and some light tapping by moving it around and gradually lifting it off.

If the race is steel, you can tap it off by using a screwdriver and a hammer. Position the screwdriver (flathead, btw) against the bottom of the race as close to the fork itself as possible, and tap (carefully) with the hammer.

A slightly more elegant method is to use a bench vise. Use Al or copper vise jaw inserts if you have them.

Put the fork in the vise vertically and close the jaws until they overlap the underside of the crown race but don't tighten it on the fork crown. The crown race will then sit on the upper edges of the vise jaws.

Tap the top of the steerer tube with a soft hammer and/or use a block of wood to protect the steerer and the race should pop off.

If you have a spring-loaded punch, it works like a charm. Use the flat tip that looks like a sharp flathead screwdriver.

Technique is the same as the flathead screwdriver/hammer method - work your way slowly around the crown. Little by little, the race will lift off.

use a brass punch as it won't dent a steel race if you want to reuse it.

Thanks guys. The beyatch let go after a merciless couple of taps with a square punch. Was able to Mcguyver a round slide punch to set the new race using a piece of galvanized pipe. Fits into the lower bearing like a glove now.
