As its setup now, I need to push my front brake lever all the way to the right to shift into my big ring up front. Sometimes if I'm on the larger half of the rear wheel cog it won't even shift into the larger ring, I have to shift into a higher gear in the back first. I think these two problems are related.
Any input is help to me.

Try adding a little tension to the front derailleur cable using the barrel adjustor. With the chain on the smallest chainring there should be no slack in the cable.
