My race bike is completly shimano 105 except for my chain and cassette. I use a combo of SRAM and Ultegra cassettes. In the past I have always used SRAM chains, usually the 950. However, I just got an Ultegra chain dirt cheap. I am wondering if it is possible to use a SRAM powerling on a shimano chain? I just dont want to mess with carrying around a spare chain pin. What do you guys do? Thanks!

I use a chain tool, but I'm both poor and a retrogrouch. Why dont you try it and see, before you try to rely on it.

Yes, you can use a SRAM powerlink on a Shimano chain, as long as both are the same width (e.g. both 9 speed.)

I'm currently using SRAM PowerLinks on two Shimano 9-speed chains... HG73 and HG93, IIRC. Nary a problem. :)
