View Full Version : My, uh, genital feels weird after cycling...

Hi, this is my first post ever, here, please bear with me and sorry it it's covered before. I just signed up today to Bikeforums. I have enjoyed biking for some time, and try to bike in the winter as well. I recently bought one of those devices where you can "ride' your bike in your living room, I'm sure you know what I mean, resistance devices. I want to keep biking daily, and if in the winter I miss a day of "real" biking, then at least I can use the machine.

Well, tried it for the first time today, half hour, was a great workout. But I noticed that after the workout (and I'll be as civilized here as I can) the tip part of my genitale (I am a male) felt very strange. Not really painful, but like it didn't really belong to me anymore. Not even numb, I could feel something, but it was odd. I was wearing blue jeans and boxer shorts, maybe that was the problem. Or what I am more worried about, did it somehow create a situation where the blood flow didn't want to go down into that area, because of the way I was riding, or the seat geometry.

The whole aura of that thing went away after a few minutes of just laying flat on bed, and it was back to normal. But for a while it just felt like there was an alien in my pants, I can't really explain it, it was just so weird. I just want to avoid it again. If it helps, I was not drinking any alcohol, I don't use any drugs or take any medications, and I don't have diabetes or impotency.

Any remedy? If it's because I wasn't wearing the right clothes, what should I wear, something like silk pants. I am sorry, I'm not aware of the right thing. Any help would be appreciated. I know it sounds a bit funny, but I'm not pulling any jokes, I am sorry if it's something everyone knows about anyway.
Thanks, Buckwheat

I would recommend regular biking shorts with padding. Remember to stand up. You may have sat in one place to long and put to much pressure or it was the chafing against the clothing you were wearing. Try this and see if it helps.

This is why we need a men's cycling forum. :)

I'm guessing that the sensation you describe was caused by a little bit of friction. Jeans and boxers aren't really very good for cycling. You move around in them too much. As Detrieux said, try some proper cycling shorts.

And welcome to the forums.

I've actually paid for this before.

Get a quality pair of padded biking shorts and get your position on the bike checked out by a reputable local bike shop.

The most important thing is to be comfortable while on the bike or else the bike gets dusty in the garage.

Welcome to the forums, buckwheat. Please don't be so intimidated, you can tell us anything. :D

yes thsi is coming from a female, but working at a LBS for some reason I'm the one to talk to when guys have problems like this... Anyways, everything was mentioned before, about proper riding position, and proper clothing to wear. Also when you put your bike in your trainer it brings the back end of the bike up a good half a foot or so, enough that when ur sitting on ur bike you are slanted forwards. You can either buy a special stand for your front wheel, or put a couple books under it. This is probably not your problem, (jeans and boxers most def is) but you're trying to enjoy yourself, and a couple of books will make it alittle bit easier on you :D :D:D:D

Ok I'm done, leaving this new found section "The men's bike forum"

Use a carpenter's level to make sure the nose of the saddle is level with the rear of the saddle. I suggest that to EVERYONE who complains of special "pains."

i've gotten squirrelly down there from loose clothing - the jeans and boxers is a no no... shorts and chamois my friend. a new seat with a channel in the centre may help too

Ah yes...

Back in my wrenching/riding/racing days...when this happened...this calls for indiscreet massage. <g>

It helps to keep altering your position if you find this to be a problem. You also want to make sure that you're not carrying too much of your weight on your saddle.

Good luck,
Tom

Airborne...

With a nick like that it's simply obvious that you'd not have the problem...<g>

Actually, it's a veiled reference to what Bicycling wrote...they suggested "Discreet Massage" and we thought it'd be more fun to have indiscreet massage instead.

happy trails,
