Any recommendations?

Building my first wheel this weekend, got a good deal on a Sanshin NJS hub off ebay and an Araya Super Hard Anodized rim...

what does the 14/15 mean? it that gauge?

Yup. 15 on the inside and 14 on the nipple and end.

yeah, double butted. they're 14 gauge at the j and threaded nipple portion, and 15 gauge in the middle. a double butted spoke is acutually stronger because under stress the force directs in the thinner part which gives a little, rather than having it go to the j or nipple...

Why not? Just curious.

14/15 is thicker than say a 15/17, thus a bit more heavy duty and can take more abuse...

but yeah, you might want something a bit beefier for your first wheel build.

14/15 = guaging... thickness of spoke at head and body. double butted (14/15g) is 14 guage (thicker) at the hub and nipple end, and 15 guage (thinner) in the body of the spoke.

anybody use straight guage. I'm building up a set right now and want to figure this out. Also anybody know where I can get spokes for less than the usual dollar a piece

SG will build a stiffer wheel than DB, but at the expense of decreased fatigue strength.

oh crap, you're right. i was thinking of competitions. i used them on my last wheel build... which was almost four years ago. hehehe

I have used straight guage DT for a couple of city bike builds. I'd use butted for a track bike or fast road bike, though. And yeah, $1 a spoke is highway robbery.

14g straight is the way to go for strong on the cheap. But if you're building sunshine hubs, might as well spring for the butts.

14/15 gives you the best of both worlds. You get strength at the j-hook and nipple, but a little spring(and lighter weight, an ounce or so per wheel) from the 15g mid section. I believe that wheels built with these spokes hold up better because the spoke can soak up some of the hit rather than transfering it all into the rim. One of the companies building downhill wheels noticed that their butted wheels had fewer failures than the straight guage wheels. So they would be good on potholes and railroad tracks as well.
