I need a new upper pulley/jockey wheel for my 2005 10sp. Ultegra derailler. I was thinking of aftermarket and found theseand though they were pretty cool. I searched around and it seems like most are 11 teeth for the 10 speed compatible. Is there a problem with shifting if I use these 12 tooth wheels? I'm more concerned with smooth shifts and losing any grams from such a small part.

Just buy replacement Shimano pulleys. They're what, $15/pair? If you really want the bling of CNC pulleys, make sure that the top one has a little bit of lateral float, otherwise it will make it a bit tougher for the chain to track the cog properly.

Well, I opted for the OEM replacement but the price was $15 for one Shimano pulley/jockey wheel. The LBS didn't have one but they offered to take it out of a stock Ultegra derailler. I didn't feel like driving all around or making calls to find a better deal. I'm trying to buy a few bits here and there at the same LBS in case I need help wrenching anyway. Most things I buy online since the prices are so much better.

How many miles did you have on the pulley you're replacing? 10-speed hasn't been out that long.

I had just over 1700 miles. It certainly wasn't worn out. I was out riding the other day and jumped my chain off the front chainring while shifting from the 39 to 53 at speed. Instead of stopping and putting it back on by hand I tried to shift and pedal it back on and somehow the whole chain got twisted and jammed. The chain twisted onto the guide pulley at the rear and I guess I put a little to much pressure on it and it tore the plastic on one tooth on the pulley.

Lessons learned...
1. set the stops better on the front derailluer or it may cost you $15
2. don't be fancy and just pull over to fix it right... it will only take a few seconds

IMHO you should have your bike taken away.
