Next June, I am thinking of attempting a cross country bike trip from San Diego to Charleston, SC. It's about 2200 miles. I plan to try and average 100 miles a day, so it will take under a month. This will be an "on the cheap" trip. Camping in a tent most of the way, with a motel every three days or so. I am planning to fly my bike from Kentucky to San Diego, make the trip, and have my loyal wife pick me up in SC. Total expenses (not counting the bike) should be under $3,000 for maps, airfare, meals and lodging in cheap, out of the way motels. Anybody interested?

Trmeegheen. Yeah, It is a life's goal to cross the US.. I already have a major portion of the maps I need.. Am thinking about it.. Had thought about a ride across Utah this time..
Might be the wrong year.. Work and other vacation plans? Could work out..Most of the country- 100 miles a day is no big thing..Might be a challenge maybe two days with the mountains of California and New Mexico.. Would you generally follow the course outline of Adventure Cycling maps. I have them from California to eastern Texas.. one half of the coutry almost..
One consideration, have you checked out the organized tours.? Your estimate of 3,000 dollars is not out of the ball park, but some organized tours are not much more? I will be thinking about it and watching the response..Thanks for this thread..

Hi Somerset,
I am from Corbin Ky, Just thought I'd find someone close to home to talk to. I am planning a ride on the Lewis and Clark trail leaving in June. This will be my second tour, I am much more
into long distance backpacking but thought I'd do something
a little different this time. Have a Good Ride and have fun.

Which route are you taking ? There might be some folks here who could do pieces of the ride with you, or save you a few bucks on the motels.

I'm looking for partners for a Trans USA tour beginning in May from Los Angeles to NY and or Boston, but I could go via SC. No real hurry hear. Would prefer to go in May though. Route and departure are negotiable. If interested email me at spence18@ticnet.com

Could you please explain a little, what long distance backpacking is?

There are 3 Long Trails in the USA,
The Appalachian Trails-runs from Ga to Me and is 2200 miles
The Pacific Crest Trail- runs from Mexico to Canada thru Calif, Ore, and Wash
and The Continental Divide Trail-runs from Mexico to Canado thru NM, Co,
Wy, Id, and Montana.
To do long distance backpacking you hike most or all of a trail this long
in one season, taking from 4 to 6 months.
Hope that answers your question. Mother Goose

Ok, thanks. Indeed, I heard of this before... am not very familiar with any of the details of such an activity... :) Sounds pretty extreme though...

You might be able to get some grant money to finace that trip. I did something similar once. I've been hearing about a grant from Balance bar. I think they gives grants for up to $10,000. you can probably find the info at their site. balancebar.com. just thought i'd share that info. I wish I'd known about it before my trip.
