Mountain Biking - Steel Race bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been looking to get a new frame for my xc race bike. I wanted to go with steel and have been looking at the Jamis dragon pro/team but am having difficulty finding one so I need an alternate frame. Sticking with steel Ive been leaning towards a Cove Handjob... has anyone ridden/have one and can give feedback.

You might want to look into the Kona Explosif. I just got one from Bikeman.com for $399. I haven't built it up yet, but it seems like it'll be a sweet ride. The shaping of the triple butted tubing and stays is amazing and the green paint job looks amazing. The sliding rear dropouts are pretty beefy though, which makes the frame a bit rear-end heavy. My 19 inch weighs in at ~4.5 pounds.
I also considered the Dragon(more expensive, no canti mounts), the Handjob (more all-mountain oriented than XC) and the Zion 853 (reports of finish/paint quality not being so good). All of these are made with high-end tubesets, weigh about the same, and all but the handjob are made in taiwan. I finally settled on the Explosif because of the possiblity to singlespeed it (just for fun, or next time I shear a rear der. off in a race)

Steel race bike...is that not an Oxymoron?
Back when I was racing, my bike was steel. Many bikes were steel. Some of the best race bikes such as the Ritchey P-series (20/21/22/23) were steel.
