Touring - Bar ends and grip shifters?

I am building a bike and want to place bar ends on the new bars. I am using Sram grip shifters and the directions say to make sure to leave room for the bar ends when placing the shifters. How do I place the bar ends when the grip that comes with the shifters has an end over it? I feel duub.

From my experiences with long distance touring on a mountain bike, I can tell you that you need barends. They help keep your hands from going numb. If you relish the idea of spending 6 weeks with fingers that are asleep, go ahead and leave the bar ends at home ;)

To babysaph: The easiest way to deal with the grips that have a cover on the end of them, is to squirt plenty of hairspray in them so that they go on easily. While they are still slippery, use a soft headed mallet and smack them on the end where the bar is. This will generally cut the grip and you can easily remove the rubber end. If you have to use a hard hammer, do it very gently so that you don't bugger the end of the bar. Just hit the grip enough to cut the grip. You can use a razor knife to remove the last bits of material.

After you cut the grips, either slide them off again (they should still be loose) or slide them on far enough for the barends to fit. Tighten everything and let them sit for a while so that the hairspray does its work and then go for a ride!
