Touring - Repairs expected on a used Trek 520?

Ebay has a Trek 520 for a decent price right now..
But was curous about what damage can be expected with 1400 miles on it? Is it even worth it, considering I'll have to take it in for a tune up (LBS) and fitting?

Be very careful. I'd be willing to pay $300-400 for the bike at the most. It's going to sell for more than that. Heck, you can get a new Jamis Aurora for less than $800 and it's a better bike AND it's new. And that's with bike shop support!
Ebay isn't a really great place to buy a touring bike. Try craig's list and local bike shops.
1500 miles is very low mileage. A tour bike is built to cross the continent and that's 5000 miles for just one trip. A commuter who does 15 miles a day would cover much more than that in 6 months.
The sizing is wrong, it's not a 56 cm, probably a 53, and I don't think it's a 1990 since they were silver (see www.vintage-trek.com). Maybe it's an '89 because they came in blue - see: http://www.vintage-trek.com/images/trek/Trek89Brochure.pdf

I would pass on the bike. If the owner can not take time to fix the bar wrap, who knows what else has been neglected on the bike. If you are still interested in the bike, I would get a set price on packing/shipping before you place a bid.

I wouldn't believe it has *only* 1500 miles on it either. It's tough to judge how many miles a bike has on when you get to see it close up. Who knows about a bike on Ebay.
Look around locally-- right now there are still a few stray '05s around on sale. It's a good bet you could find a new touring bike for close to the same amount of money that Trek is going to sell for.
I don't think I would ever buy a bike off E-bay unless it was in my area and I could look at it and ride it. I just bought a 1998 520 off my local Craigslist for $550. It is in mint condition and came fully loaded. Actually, more than loaded because it had many pricey upgrades. The guy who brought it to the house also brought his Jamis. Nice, but not a Trek 520. Still, I would never pay $1,100 for a new 520. There are older bikes around like mine that are a far better value. True of any brand, not just a 520. Used bikes are cheap. Quality used bikes are a great resource.
You ask about expected repairs? For the average bike, I would be concerned only with BB integrity and whether the frame/fork was bent (look for 'buckling' in the paint on the tubes). You'll probably end up tossing the saddle and/or h'bars for something that fits you better anyway. Bottom line is: you're gonna fiddle with it no matter what. Normal bike repair is pretty inexpensive. A new BB on my Trek 830 was only $28 at the shop. A whole top-to-bottom tune is about $16.
Damage over 1500 miles. Under normal use, there should be none.
you can get a bargain off auction websites, but you can also get a dog too ...
last bike i bought sight unseen cost me a little bit to get up to scratch ...
*sh*t of a job trying to remove seatpost
*disassemble almost the entire bike to clean and lube
*lots of elbow grease to generally clean it up and remove the crud
i have a trek 520, and they are very sturdy bikes that can take some abuse ... the owner of this bike has called it an 18sp, but says lower down that it has 7x3 gears or 21sp ... if it is 18sp, you could be stuck for parts at a later date, plus the spacing on the rear for the hub is much smaller than the 135mm for current touring bikes ...
