Road Cycling - Allez Comp is not the E5 matrix... oops, sure felt nice though...

Thought the Comp was E5, but its columbus SLX! Had a nice feel to it, very smooth - but a bit heavy... 18.5 lbs. Anyone else ridden a 2003 Allez comp? Need to know your thoughts on the ride quality!
Thanks
I wonder what this new Columbus SLX is since I have an older lugged steel frame that is also made out of Columbus SLX :P

That's heavy now, huh? What frame size are you calling 18.5 pounds heavy for?
Man, I guess I need a lighter bike.

It was a 54. I guess 18.5# is NOT heavy, but I sure would like a 17# bike...
BTW. the Klein Quantum Pro weighed 17.5 w/o pedals (full DA dbl)
the Trek 5200 weighed 18.3 w/o pedals (full Ult triple)
So, at 18.5 the Allez is doing just fine compared to full carbon frame...(full Ult dbl)

.(full Ult dbl) Cool, but if you are not in perfect shape and no excess body fat,you are kidding yourself, and quite possibly spending money foolishly.

Pokey, not sure I understand...
Foolish for getting a light bike? Or, foolish for getting a double?
And, NO, I'm not in perfect shape. But, I am in pretty good shape and plan on getting in much better shape...
Mike
There's two versions of the '03 Allez Comp - SLX (Aluminum) & FOCO (Cro-mo). I've ridden both and the cro-mo one is very nice (The 54 cm weighs 19.0 lbs w/o pedals). Just ask your dealer to substitute an American Classic wheelset and you'd have the best riding of the four (FOCO, SLX, Klein, Trek), plus you wouldn't have to replace the frame in a few years (Assuming you plan to ride your road bike a bunch and then will it to someone who'll do the same).
Regardless, they'll all get you down the road just fine.*
ps: You might try hypnosis for your "heavy-bike" phobia / Just kidding!? (This after-thought brought to you by a fellow enthusiast who's riding a 15.1 lb road bike and can't drop anyone anymore).
*Oh, and by the way, if there's such things as "kidding yourself" or "spending money foolishly" when it comes to bicycles, then we're all guilty...

May as well just ride a 25 pound $20 Univega garage sale special and be happy. At least the geezer that blows you in the weeds on his won't be chuckling so much.

"At least the geezer that blows you in the weeds"
Was that a slip?
The Allez Comp is Columbus tubing, the E5 is on the S-Works. I think you'll love either one, Specialized road bikes are really nice this year.

Well, after all this soul searching, chomping at the bit, and drooling on my shoes I've decided to get the Specialized Allez Comp 27. It rides beautifully, especially for a beginner roadie like me. And, I just couldn't quite see myself going for the double, when all I'm going to do with this bike is ride it in the mountains... In the end, I made the most practical, functional choice for me! And, I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO SHOW UP....
Thank you for all of your input, I'll keep you all posted...

Hawk, lemme know how it rides. I am really interested in getting the Comp as well, only in a double. Lemme know what size you get and how much the total bike weighs.
Thanks.

The Good News:
I have a connection at Specialized that's hooking me up!
The Bad News:
I have NO ****ING IDEA when I'll get the bike! (hopefully within a couple weeks)...
It will be a 54cm! I'll let you all know what the low-down is when I mount my stead...

Actually, the 2003-2004 allez comp and pro are both made of the Specialized E5 aluminum alloy, in partnership with Columbus. Though the material is the same as the S-works frameset, the tubing is not. The s-works tubes are much more radically butted and shaped (columbus aerotec, as opposed to the comp and pro's SLX), clearly demonstrating that good frames are as much about design as it is about the frame material.
