<<<<<<<<<<Bicyclist Fatally Shot Near Shaw Metro Station
By Clarence Williams and Martin Weil
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, March 18, 2006; Page B04

A man who apparently was riding a bicycle was shot and killed last night outside the Shaw-Howard University Metro station in Northwest Washington. A woman who was with him also was shot, police said.

The shooting occurred about 9:40 p.m. a few feet from the station entrance at Eighth and R streets, officials said.

The man died at the scene, police said. They said the woman apparently went by herself to Howard University Hospital a few blocks away. She was wounded in the wrist, according to a D.C. police spokesman.

Neither the man nor the woman was identified immediately.

Police said the man was shot in the head, possibly during an altercation. The nature of the altercation was not specified.

D.C. police said they were seeking two men who apparently headed north on Eighth Street after the shooting. At least one of them reportedly had a handgun.

A Metro spokeswoman said the wounded man was apparently found about 30 feet from the Eighth and R streets entrance to the station, which is on the Green Line.

D.C. police said the station manager heard shots.

The Metro entrance was shut down. Metro Transit Police stopped trains entering the station from both directions to search for suspects. None was found, the spokeswoman said.

D.C. police halted traffic on nearby streets.>>>>>>>>>

There's been a lot of strange sightings around here recently. Notably on the dcist blog a mention of a guy getting hit with a brick thrown from the balcony of an apt. building on 11th street NW.

If you ride in DC, please be careful.

I'll post more if I hear or read anything.

+1 if you live in the Metro - but then again, most folks in the Metro area know this already...

Well this is second hand info but... A friend of mine was attacked by, according to him, about 10 kids on 7th and O last month. I just wanted to put it out there because this stuff is sounding less and less like isolated incidents.

Doesn't sound like much information as far as motive, etc. Keep us updated.

If you ride in DC, please be careful.

Especially if you involve yourself in criminal activity at the street level. That's some dangerous cycling.

And he wasn't riding a bike.Contrary to preliminary reports from police sources, Johnson said yesterday that Norcome was not accompanied by a woman and that police do not believe he was riding a bicycle but that he was using a cane.

"He had some type of injury, so I don't see him riding a bike with a cane," Johnson said. He said a bicycle was, however, left at the scene.

Cycle by shooting?

I used to live about a block from there. "Random" violence was very rare, almost always the victim and the perp knew each other. Bicycles were a favorite transportation of those involved in the drug trade, which once led my wife to make a disparaging remark about "grown men riding bicycles" that I still hold against her!

With all the posts, and reading the following quote, this sounds more drug related to me.

"Police Sgt. John Johnson said that Norcome, who grew up in the Shaw area, had a criminal record, and that the shooting was probably not arbitrary."

Yes, it appears that this shooting was not the result of some bike vs. car type of incident. As the weather warms up and there are more people out and about there seems to be a lot more potential for "incidents." I'm more aware when I ride as there was a brick throwing incident on 11th st. NW a few weeks ago. This resulted in a broken leg for the cyclist. I ride up that hill (it has a bike lane) to get home almost every time I ride. See the dcist blog where this was first noted if you live in dc and want some more info.
