Well do you? Vote here.

Sorry....I'll not put the "I like pie" option this time.

It could be completely removed for all I care. That would probably be for the best.

Today is the 2nd time I ever looked at my post count.
Again the only reason I looked, is cuz its being talked about and it peaked my curiosity.

Otherwise I couldn't care less

I don't care about my post count at all, and if I did, I'd prefer to have less posts, rather than more. (Too many posts = no life?)

I only have 1.2 posts a day, don't have a life, I'm not working right now, don't have a girl friend, and I'm not riding my bike. What's wrong with me?! I don't think school is taking up that much of my time.

yes. Now by yes i dont mean that you should at all costs do everything to make your post count number higher. I realize that its bad to have people posting just to post and not contributing anything.

but it is a useful tool, even if it were to not be made public i want to know how many posts i have.

I said it before, I'll say it again--I don't care how many posts that I, you, he, she, or they have. I'll gladly sell mine to the highest bidder...

Thanks for starting this thread, KT. Its the only one I've seen today that is worth responding to, with the exception of the sticky on the top of the page. Not that the mods have seen fit to appropriately address any of the arguments made there, mind you.

I look at peoples post counts all the time, when i see someone i dont know i look at there profile. If they have 3000 posts then obviously they're a established members of the forum.
I use it to compare myself to, if im in a discussion with someone it doesnt hurt to know if he has made like 20 posts on bike forums and is a real newb or is someone who has 13 posts per day for years.

now there have been plenty of threads talking about peoples post counts and who had high ones, alittle bragging was involved but i dont think thats necesarily a bad thing.

I find the page very interesting

I just don't see how post count can determine if someone is a newb. If they only have 20 posts, they are probably new to bikeforums, but that certainly doesn't mean that they don't know anything about bikes.

What does this say about members like MsVicki? She's been with us for years, yet posts very little. When she does it's either a very profound or entertaining contribution. How does someone who is relativly short member time, yet posts their ass off with nonsense have more esteem than she?

EJ123 has 1793 posts.

MERTON has 7887.

Are you really going to trust their word about anything bike-related?

KingTermite

It tells you nothing. Because it could be thousands of posts about movies and such. People who post very little could easily be the most knowledgable about cycling as maybe they don't post as much because they are constnatly on their bike and don't feel they need to post here and brag about it.

To compare yourself to others based on post count is quite sad and immature to be honest.

I don't care and this forum makes you a senior member after about 20 posts, so what would the point be anyway? Another forum I post on requires thousands of post to reach senior status and they have about 1/20th the members that are here. Needless to say I am only a half-dork there, after three years. I think full status is dorktard

funny, no one seemed to be offended or called immature when this thread came out.

is that a good enough example of post count being used fairly and in good fun.

I didn't call you immature for looking at them....I called you immature for the comment about comparing yourself to other people based on post count.

Maybe I'm a bit rash...I didn't mean to insult you. I started this thread for everyone to get a vote and be allowed to post their feelings. You have done so and I'm not annoyed that you are on the opposite side of the fence as me. I just personally find it silly.

But I'll stop now because I'm not trying to "sway" people's voting. I want it to be fair and impartial so that it is a true representation of what the MEMBERS want.

I dont mind having/showing the post count nor the amount. Though I like that it shows whether the member is active in BF.

Well, I finally got caught up with what's been happening while I was gone, so now I get to post. I really don't see the importance of a post count, I've only checked on mine to see if I was getting out of hand with posting too much. I'm guilty myself of posting things that aren't too bike related, but I also have a lot of good questions and I discuss them on the related sub forum.

I'm not sure how many people were posting just to make a high count but I truly believe that some of our threads ("person above you", "whatch doin'?") helped us to learn more about each other. It develops a knowledge of each other which can be used to enrich ourselves. There are a few posters who have contributed that I found that are almost borderline genius. Make a few friends, help out a few friends. And possibly meet a few friends in real life. Sharing the knowledge and education is never harmful if used to improve ourselves.

Padding your post counts should be a violation of forum policy. The moderators need to make a policy stating such and then enforce it. Beyond that, they shouldn't be in the business of deciding what is "intelligent" or "too silly", etc.

It is absurd that a forum entitled Foo could have posts deleted because they are not intelligent or because they are silly. Totally absurd. Either rename it or forget it.

Portis
03-19-06, 08:11 PM
The next question is how do you determine if someone is padding their post count? I'm no genius but most of the time it is pretty easy to tell. For example when somebody publicly states that is what they are doing, you might have a problem.

Beyond that it will require some judgement but you will be judging whether or not someone is padding their post count instead of whether or not somebody's post is intelligent or unsilly enough.

We come to BF's, yes, to talk about bicycles and cycling. But more than that, to laugh and play like children. To escape all the injustices of the world. To find like minded persons who, for an instant, deal with us on an equal level and share in our love of cycling. In hopes that somehow we can connect in other ways as well.

So, please, please, don't rob us of our text and documented collaborations expressed as posts weaving a complicated emotional attachement building the fabric of fellowship. :)

I voted that I don't care about post count, but that's not entirely true. I am addicted to statistics from using other forums so I will look at people's profile from time to time, which includes seeing their post count, but I wouldn't miss it if they removed that counter from everyone's profile.

If a member contributes to the forums I read, I'll notice it, and I don't need a number to see that they know their stuff - it's apparent, really.
