Mountain Biking - What's wrong with the P.1 from specialized?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How can this bike be so cheap?

I'm thinking about picking one of these up for thrashing around town. I (obviously) don't know a lot about mountain bikes, but these deal seems too good to be true. Disc Brakes front and rear, and front suspension for only 600? Something has got to be wrong with this bike right?

There is nothing wrong with the P1 or 2, specialized also dropped the price $1,000 on the bighit comp for 2003. Their putting the right price on their bikes now. The fork on the P1 and 2 isnt too great.....but the bikes are still good deals. I might get a P2 also. The bikeshop that I work at ordered 8 P1's........because they are going to sell like HOTCAKES:D Now the light freeridng part......it depends on how much skill you have. If you have a lot of skill this bike could handle almost anything, even though the fork may not let you do huge stuff.

:)...what I consider light freeriding can be generalized. 5 ft to flat and around 8 ft to tranny with technical man made stunts that is difficult to ride through. Of course that varries from person to person. I know guys that drop 10 to 15 ft to flat and can use low end bikes because of how smooth and accurate they are. If you talk to guys that live on the Shore that is considered a xc trail. Talk to someone from Ontario and that 'may' be an entirely diffferent answer.

Also I think it is a steal. That bike sold last year (bikes similar) in the 1300$ cdn range. I would just change the fork and the rear rim. Both are actually xc and will break pretty easily depending on your skill and size.
