1) are these two things the same?
2) if you have the choice of getting a frame with welded gyro tabs, would you get them? i don't plan on using one, but just in case in the future...
3) they have stand alone units as well, right?? would tabs on the frame be advantageous?
4) do they take away much from braking power?
5) so if you were getting a frame would you get them on there?

4.nope.. bmx' brakes suck anyway due to it being rear wheel only (or at least as far as the gyro is concerned) so dont worry about it

Gyros work just as good as straight cables if they are set up and maintained properly.
these are them...so you would get these? could someone please post a pic of the other part i would need to make a complete gyro? i am confused as to what i need when one already has the frame tabs. what do you think of tabs built into the stem vs the frame? see pic what is one of the best, smoothest gyros available?
are these two setups equivalent? how can this be when they are in different locations?

I'd try to get a frame with no mounts or tabs or anything at all.
I guess if you want to run brakes you should get a frame that lets you, but I wouldn't worry too much about future-proofing it, I mean it's just a frame. If you want to change your setup later on you'll probably want a new bike anyways. Get whatever lets you run your brakes how you think you want them, and live with it unless you REALLY hate it.

yeah...that is kind of how i feel too. but now i am wondering if i should run a gyro right away. it seems like i got two different opinions on their effect on braking performance. any other comments?
also, is it mostly flatlanders that have gyros or do street type riders like them as well? or do not many people use them these days??
Do you want to spin your bars completely around, or just x-up and back? A longer straight cable is the way to go for the latter. A gyro really doesn't have too much effect on how smoothly your bars turn, and contrary to what most of the kids say, a properly set up brake can be made to work very well with a gyro.
Again, it comes down to what tricks you want to do. A long straight cable looks much smoother than a messy gyro.
if you run a straight cable now. you'll probably be to lazy to go back in the future. dont go with the tabs...if you reallllllllllly want to go back you can just buy tabs that you mount on for a few bucks.

My gyro setup looks quite nice thank you...unlike a straight cable will over time...
A gyro adds so much crap around the top tube. (I run one) But on a custom build, a straight cable looks cleaner and serves mostly the same purpose.

If you didnt know, you need 2 sets of tabs to run a gyro. One set up by, or on the stem, and one set down by, or on the frame. So it dosent really matter which idea people like better becuase to run a gyro you will need both anyway. If you are good at tuning your brakes a gyro setup will stop you just fine, but its a lot easyer with a straight cable, alot cleaner looking and less of a hassle. Im sure the straight cable probably is a lighter set up too if you care at all about that. The weight difference is probably minimal though.

I've seen those pictures of your bike, and I am going to go ahead and disagree with you on your statement that your "gyro setup looks quite nice".
when you purchase a gyro, it comes with all the parts you need. if your frame or stem has tabs, you simply don't use the parts that came with the gyro for the tabs...
I don't do barspins much anymore, I don't think my arms will allow me to x-up anymore but I will always run a gyro. it's clean and out of the way. the cable never gets bent or kinked. my breaks work very well.
I would stay away from the Snafu thing. get Odyssey or the SST ORYG thing.

That Snafu one isn't as bad as one would expect for a Snafu product, actually. Their cables, however, are awful.

Just run a straight cable.
When i got my Odyssey Linear i could do double barspins (hypothetically) and double tailwhips before it locked up..
Not that i cut it down so its not uber long but i can still do a barspin or try tailwhips and it doesnt lock up or run out of slack...
And the average ride cant do more than one barspin or tailwhip in one run...so just stick with a straight cable.

No gyro looks smooth. In this case, he's being honest. Compared to a straight cable, they add clutter.
regarding the Snafu thing, I'm only going on info from a friend who ran one....

Yeah, that and the fact that he has the longet seatpost I've seen in well over a decade. To pinch the seat with that, you'd have to use one thigh and your nutsack.

I'm buying a longer, Cane Creek Thudbuster LT soon.
I don't remember buying a bike to make it confortable to you.
When my 36 year old best friend rode my bike he asked why I have such a short seatpost...
