I got this idea from a77impala's new bike thread....

I'm a bit of a scrounger and it's been a while since I had a new bike. It was a new red CCM with coaster brake and 28" wheels. It came from a gas station where the winner of a contest had never picked it up, my dad got it for $20. I've always had a bike since then, (I have about 10 now) but that was the last new one I've had - 42 years ago!!!

How long has it been since you've owned a new bike?

Well, Let me see, 1991. Torque Titanium. Still works good. I have not blamed the bike for poor performance since.

This is a trick thread, right? The OP is really a detective hired by my wife, I'll bet. :)

The last new bike I bought before my Pilot was in February '95 when I bought a Trek 930, my son has it now. One every ten years is okay I think. I have purchased about eight used ones though.

No tricks here, but a friend of mine has a solution to your problem. He only buys yellow bikes, his wife doesn't look close enough to notice if it's a new one or not.....

I can confirm this trick (from back when I was married). Got into photography and interchangeable lenses. At first, everything got noticed. Then, after three or four lenses, they all started to look the same. (Just stay away from "L" lenses, which are off-white!)

I used that theory with handguns and it worked well. Only buy black ones (or silver).

Thats fine unless you have a Bianchi- or a LOOK, or any ither bike that has a distinctive colour scheme as part of its image. A wrong colour blue- or a red Bianchi does not look right. See attachment to only get a glimpse of the colour and it is a Bianchi.

I hate new bikes. Too many bits to change to get right- then there is all the adjustment to make to get it to fit and then there is the newness to wear off- all those tight bearings and bolts to retighten. Give me ny 5 year old bianchi any time.

1993 I think - a Fuji Suncrest MB. I've found several since then at yard sales, thrift shops and even in the trash. Not that every junker is a gem waiting to be polished, but fixing up (recycling if you will) old bikes is a fun and inexpensive hobby for me. When I run out of space or get tired of them it's easy to find someone who wants a free bike and some of the older LBS's are glad to finally sell out-of-date parts at very reasonable prices.

By the way, the idea of always buying the same color would definitely work with my wife.

For me getting a new bike is much more exciting than getting an old one. If I want the "new, old bike feeling" then I just put different tires on my Centurion or Peugeot.

New road bikes = 84 Centurion, 94 Cannondale, 96 Co-Motion tandem, 98 Marin, 00 Calfee, 03 Tallerico
6 new bikes in 22 years, the tandem was wife's idea
Acquired old road bikes = late 60s Evans, 70s Schwinn, 84 Peugeot

The Cannondale, Marin, Evans and Schwinn have been given away or sold.

Well it used to be 31.5 years ago when I picked up my Raleigh Record. But two weeks ago I bought a new Specialized, FSR XC Comp. So I guess I won't catch your record pinerider.

I have no problem spending money on decent equipment. I don't need the latest and greatest, just good quality stuff. Then I maintain it and it serves well for a long time. Currently, I have a Sun EZ Sport AX. A little heavy, but I ride a flat trail so weight doesn't matter. Great bike for a comfortable, no pain, workout. Racer? Nooo.
