Gulp - darn hard to find.

I want to raise the bars on a Schwinn LeTour (not sure the year). LBS got it as high as he could, but said he had a hard time finding a taller stem since the inner diameter on the stem is 21.1mm, not the standard 22.2.

I can find all sorts of tall stems in the normal diameter such as

http://www.bikepro.com/products/stems/nittor_rod.html

http://www.rivendellbicycles.com/webalog/handlebars_stems_tape/16044.html

But nothing in 21.1mm.

Any help ?

I had the same problem a couple of years ago, I ended up buying a thick wall low end stem and machining it down to the correct diameter. I know about all the safety issues involved but there was no other way. I work with metals as a welder, machinist and found that there are a lot of low stems available with more than ample wall thickness, you don't have to reduce the diameter much to have it fit. I've been riding the bike in winter for years with the modified stem and it's been fine.
