There's been a rash of accidents in Miami along the same route. Earlier this month a cyclist was killed on the same route. I ride it all the time and its as safe as it gets in Miami (which isn't saying much). The place where this cyclist was hit has a very wide breakdown lane that eveyone bikes on.

Whats interesting is the way the cops minimize the whole thing.

"The cyclist was riding a metallic silver Klein race bike that was left mangled next to the roadway. But d'Heere said racing bikes are so lightweight they damage easily."

What the cop is saying is, don't be fooled by the mangled bike into thinking it was a bad crash, those light bikes "do that".

What the! The guy is in critical condition at the trauma unit, of course it was a bad crash. It happens time and time again, cops have no sympathy for the cyclist. Their attitude is, if you don't want to get hurt, don't ride a bike.

I don't know why cops never take the cyclist's side. I know a bunch of people who hav been hit by cars, all more respectable than the drivers, all T-bone accidents or in one case my wife was hit by a rashly 3-point turning tow truck. Thank goodness no serious injuries, though hospital costs and bike costs, and cops do nothing not even tickets. I don't know if the presence of bike cops makes any difference to force attitudes...
