General Cycling Discussion - Now, biking causes infertility again?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Erm, just follow this link http://msnbc.com/news/842188.asp?0cv=CB10&cp1=1.

"THE ABNORMALITIES were found in professional mountain bikers and other “extreme” bikers who logged at least 3,000 miles yearly — or an average of more than two hours a day, six days a week."
I want to know how to get in on the next test. Maybe I can get paid to ride those hours.

Does that link work?
Can you include a brief description along with the link?
In the research I have seen in medical journals, the test group was a set of full-time extreme MTBers, and the control group were cycle-commuting medical students. The real result was that pounding down a mountain for 2 hours a day is damaging compared to cruising along the city streets. In the newspaper reports of the research the result is that ANY cycling is damaging. These journalists have never heard of control groups or had any form of scientific education, yet feel free to mis-interpret the data.

Now, biking causes infertility again?
Again??
As I recall, previous research was investigating biking and impotence, not infertility.
As we all know (I hope), there is a difference between infertility and impotence.
At least it's infertility, not impotence. So what, I say- does everyone in the world have to reproduce?
I have probably logged more than 100K miles / 160K km in the (mostly Brooks Pro) saddle, and everything still works properly. In any sport, one has to pay close attention to early symptoms of problems and to take appropriate corrective action, such as a change of equipment or position.

If it'd only work for me...sigh...I ended up posting the record (time-wise) for a vascetomy at our local hospital...1.5 hours.
Guess I should have ridden more...but who knew?

I am afraid that this research may be sponsored by the motor & oil industry.
They do not want to repeat errors of the tobacco industry and attack any alternative lifestyle while it is in the infancy.
These companies boast well populated departments of public relations, "environment supervision", etc., which occupy the whole floors in skyscrapers.
What do you think they are busy with? Playing?
Or did you hear from that "researches" that driving is dangerous? Though it is extremely dangerous, both for drivers and for environment, including people living along the busy streets.
Especially dangerous is the fine rubber dust, produced from tires. Let alone the toxic exhaust and noise.
Besides, the excessive driving literally mutilates people. Do not we see those obese creatures, which seem hardly capable of any sexual activity. But even if they are capable, do they have a chance to meet anyone who really finds them attractive?
Again, in the "developed" countries with the high rate of motorization there is no natural population growth worth mentioning. But in China there has been strong population growth, while the majority of population used the bike as the sole transportation.
I can believe, however, that there could be some health damage due to cycling, as it could happen from typing, for example. It is called RSI (repetitive stress injury). One has to make breaks regularly, stretch, cycle defensively, etc.
But I am 100% convinced that cycling is much more healthy than driving. No one will ever be able to convince me otherwise, because it is self evident.
There is also a health damage, while cycling, which is caused by motorized transport. But it has nothing to do with cycling per se.
It is not unlikely that this "research" coincides with what happens in Western Europe. The Spain and Portugal are ruined by the record oil spill. People are sitting literally in the sh*t up to the ears.
Some cities already do not let cheap oil tankers into their ports. And here we are - empire strikes back. Again the old myth about "infertility" is pulled out into the day light.
