Commuting - Wow!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm on a business trip to Toronto and it was -7C here this morning. I was walking to my office and thinking that at -7 it feels like +3C riding 20mph in T-short. And then I saw a cyclict on a road bike, and then another! I was astonished. It's cold and there are no bike lanes or shoulder and riding here would take lots of guts.
I'm really ashamed of myself for not riding on rainy days in Bay Area. Never again!

Didn't you ever see slvoid's clothing vs. temperature chart? At -45F and 145+F, you're allowed to wuss out. Anywhere in between those temperatures you have to bike commute.
The cold isn't the problem...after all, we ski or snowboard or or snowmobile in pretty cold weather. Just dress for it. In my case the ice has usually been the problem, and the reason I haven't ridden much in the winter. But this winter the streets have been clear a huge part of the time so I've ridden (sporadically) all through.
Cold? That's warm! Minus twenty five, now that's cold!

I thinking biking in the cold is warmer than downhill skiing--you work harder! Cycling in the cold is fun and rewarding. I love it.
I've been to Lulea, Sweden a couple of times in the deepest winters. The mailmen still deliver by bike. People still run errands and get around by bike. Cold is just a state of mind that can be overcome with regularly riding in it and layering well.

-7C? That's only like "every day for the last 4 months" if not worse.
What's a bike lane?

Yep. Gotta dress for it, gotta deal with it.
I really wish Spring would show up.

It has warmed up to -7C. It's nice out now. I don't have the traffic issues - smaller town and I go to work at 5:00 and come home on a less busy route.
Actually my problem is sweating too much on the way home - too hot for my current jacket, but a little too cold for my lighter jacket.
I definitely prefer the cooler weather - we sleep with the windows open...
