Touring - Surly LHT in pea green

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I guess it can't be had anymore? :(
The new blue isn't half bad, though.

I wanted a green frame but ended up with a blue one. It looks much better in person, and I'm happy with it. It's more of a slate grey with a touch of blue than a true blue. Try to find some one with a color correct monitor to check out the color, I think you'll be surprised.

AE Bike might have one. It's listed as a 26"er, but no size is given. You might want to give them a call....

Some of us waited forever for it to GO AWAY, so it's kind of funny to hear y'all whining about not being able to get the green. I'm ordering a red one on Friday, so I can build it up myself in my garage. Can't wait.

I just found out about the LHT. Then I saw this:

The only thing I would add is the leather colored bar tape.
I'm a code monkey not a fashion consultant. I need to see something that looks good and copy it. My wife dresses me in the mornings. I haven't seen the new blue or red in any configuration that I like, probably cause people are just now getting their paws on them. That's why I want the green.
I was in the same position as you. I wanted the green, and then they apparently stopped making it. Then I accepted that and wanted the blue. Then finally I wanted the red. Now I just don't care, I can live with all the colors, I'll take any thing, I just want my frame now! It's the frame I'm after so getting a color I really like (as opposed to one I can live with) is just a bonus. Good luck in your search though, I think I ever so slightly prefer green the most too. Maybe it's just because I've seen far more "green LHT" pictures than blue or red and have gotten used to it.

the green blends better, perhaps, with the foilage while stealth camping ;)

Were you looking for a bike so ugly that no one would steal it?

My (blue) LHT build went quite smoothly, and it rides so nice. First time I tried building up a bike. I think you will really enjoy it.

To make myself look even sillier, here's why I didn't like the green-I've got a ton of black components to throw into this build once I get the frame, but I hate the way the green looks with the black, sort of like an army surplus bike, LOL. How's that for opinionated? I have been drooling over all the green ones people have been posting for the last couple years, waiting and watching. Plus, there's just something sexy about a red bike...

When I'm riding some forest road or path, I daydream about riding my green, army surplus looking LHT in the woods, camo poncho and foilage obscuring my sillhouette, liberating Norway from the Nazis during WWII.
Is that a silly, "Walter Mitty" type fantasy for a middle aged guy to have about his bicycle or what???
"....and the bike wheels went pocketa-pocketa-pocketa as he evaded hostile German rifle fire en route to fishing trawler of the resistance anchored in the fjord..."

Have you checked out http://saanichbc.net/surly/ ? Good looking LHTs in all three colors can be seen there.

point well taken, Kris
'It's the Narzi's, they've put in bike lanes all over and I've got to avoid them on the way to the resistances' boat' thought Mitty, as his bike went pocketa pocketa pocketa on the cobbles along the waterfront....

Look closer. They have them in three sizes, 42, 46 and 52.

What do you have against Army Surplus?

What do you have against Army Surplus? That's the other thing, I don't have anything against it, and I own a ton of it, (I'm an old-school punk.) I just don't want my bike like that. Anyway, even if I wanted one now, I couldn't get it. (sigh) :)

It's not pea green, it's Sage Green. Yes, it looks great with silver components. :)

Yes, silver looks very nice. I've always liked how you've set up your cockpit area...very nice & clean.

That red one doesn't look half bad. Don't like the blue myself. Another question...why do most run bar end shifters on touring bikes?

I can't wait for mine. Bought a used Sage Green (respect people) from jens5 and it's on its way now. :D

Fuji and REI touring bikes, for example, come with Shimano brifters. Trek 520s come with barcons. As you have noticed, custom builds often use barcons. I think that there are more than one reason.
tradition
some prefer friction shifting
some want to be able to switch to friction if needed after an accident
cheaper than brifters
more choices for front derailleur
you can shift more than one cog at a time both upshifting and downshifting
use of v-brakes with v specific road levers
don't like the shape of Shimano brifter hoods
(some of these reasons lead people to use Campy brifters for their touring bike)
I am sure there are others. I chose barcons because of cheapness and they give you lots of options.

It's Sage Green. I just got my Utility Blue LHT. It's a realy purdy colour up front and personal. I just completed the build on it tonight, except for a couple of items that I have to wait for. It went together very well, and looks awesome!

Thanks. Hardest part was finding a silver stem. Rest was easy. :) Seems there's a new rule, all stems must be black or something like that. :(

The red is pretty, but the blue is gorgeous! Why bar end shifters on touring bikes? Because there are a visors on mountain bike helmets?

That is so true! I bought a black one and stripped it with lye and aluminum polish. Did the same thing to my seatpost (that was laying around taken from another bike).

The blue shows up really well in that photo, looks almost a nice as it does in person. (I suppose we are both biased since our LHTs are blue :p )

A real reason that touring bikes use bar end shifters, is the ability to but them into a friction shifting setup. What it means for touring, is that you can shift nicely without having to keep the bike perfectly setup. Also there is the fact that the shifters couldn't be any simpler, no small plastic parts to break.

I was too broke to get the LHT when they had green (and I didn't), then when I got money, they stopped making the green :( . I had almost convinced myself to get the blue when... I was at a shop this weekend where I usually only go for cruiser stuff. Just looking around, seeing if maybe they had a 520, when I see a green LHT hanging in the back corner. I almost didn't see it because it was hanging infront of a forest type mural. Good camouflage (why I want the green). Pulled it down, and :) it's my size. Luck is one of my skills. ;)

Nice! I like the double handlebar set-up. I'm thinking of doing something similar on my build, maybe bullhorns and some albatross bars. How's it working out for you? Hey, how did you do that? I only see one stem?

Works beautifully. The only downside, is the lack of Cockpit room for lights and such...
