I have Indian Status, so I don't pay taxes.
No sales tax, no income tax or anything. :)
The only tax I'll pay is PST.
Besides, Rochester chews. :)

Why don't Indians pay taxes?
Jay Treaty of 1976.
It's Canada and the United State's way of "making up" for all the crap they put Natives through. :)
We also get Dual Citizenship at birth for Canada and the United States, and no border searches. :D
There used to be about 400,000 Ojibwa people where Canada is now, as of 2004 there are 435 living in Garden Villiage, ONT, the only Ojibwa reserve we have. :(

Not so sure I agree with the tax-free business, but the dual citizenship thing is pretty cool.

Do they pay wampum? Beaver pelts? Do the tax collectors get comps at the casino?

In the 90's a friend of mine said you could get a tax free carton of cigaretts from an indian reservation for 10 bucks. I don't smoke, but as far as I know, michigan taxes have driven the cost of cigarets up to about 65 bucks or so per carton. I don't know much about Indian laws, but they sound nice.

All Native American lands, (i.e. - reservations), are considered their own nations. They don't fall under the legal or tax jurisdiction of the U.S. or Canada. I guess this applies to their citizenry, as well.

You want to move back until you realize ordering bike stuff, tax amounts to 0.000000000001 of the price of getting bike goods from the U.S.
The prices here for bike stuff are usually x2 of that in the states.

I think that means you can come across the border, buy your bike stuff in the US and go back to Canada, tell the customs pale face to piss off and keep going w/ no duties. Awesome deal.

How does the Department of Homeland (in)Security feel about this? From what I understand, it's a pain in the arse to get back into the US nowadays, even for US citizens. How does being an American Indian excuse them from these (supposedly) random searches at the border? A border crossing isn't the Reservation...
Hey... do American Indians have to remove their shoes at the airport, too?

You misunderstood...the guy has two passports--one Canadian and one US, so it's easy to go back and forth across the border. Just flash the approriate passport. It has nothing to do with his First Nation status.

I Grew Up in Owen Sound. The Saugeen Indian Reservation was Only about 20 miles away. The tribe was pushed off their land in Owen Sound by British Settlers a century and a half ago. A lot of Blacks came in from the Underground Railroad to Owen Sound and they helped build the City (then they were pushed off by the Whites).
The natives in Saugeen now live in Poverty - a lot of Alcohol and drug problems.
Although there was no slavery, Canada is not the racially harmonious Country that it is made out to be.

Much Better than down here - the burbs are all white (with good schools) and downtown areas all black (with bad schools).
And to be fair, in Canada its mainly the older generation (>60) that has some residual intolerence. The younger Generations are mixing quite well (I am 40 and it was the single Black dude in my high school class that was scoring the most with the (white) chicks! - and it was not an issue)
The Native poverty is more of an Institutional problem that goes back a couple centuries.

Unless you plan on living on a reserve and earning your income from employment or business activities occurring on the reserve, you will pay income tax. Aboriginal people are subject to the same tax rules as other Canadian residents unless their income is eligible for the tax exemption under section 87 of the Indian Act.

The link above will lead you to the Revenue Canada site ( Cdn equivalent of the IRS). You'll be able to find all the information you need about taxation, government programmes and benefits for aboriginals.
