I need help figuring out why my 2005 ninja wont start. I recently bought it and it didnt run. A friend told me that when he seen the old owner pull out of a friends driveway it backfired. I dont know what would cause it, but a few people told me that it could be the spark plugs. If someone could please help me out i would greatly appreciate it!!! thanks

What kind of pedals do you have? Is it aluminum or steel frame? Do you ever ride it indoors on a trainer?

I'd switch the plugs to Campy if I were you.

You need air in your tires

I have never been able to get my 2005 Trek 1200 started either, and I bought it new. Maybe I will try to change the plugs and see what happens.

This be a bicycle forum. The only backfires going on here come from bad mexican food.

There are a few guys around with some good knowledge of motorcycles, though, so you never know... you might get an answer. :)

You bought a bike that .....Didnt.....run ??
Are you sure you should be riding ?

Kawa-Suzukis have notoriously cheep batterys.
How is the battery ? Do you have the fuel-cock
turned on ?? There is a 'gravity' mode on the fuel-cock you
might want to do your detective work in.
If it turns over are you getting spark at the plug ??
On that bike it is something simple I assure you....
Oh yeah...I once pushed a HD Sportster a mile uphill and when
I took a break because I really, truly thought I was having a heart
attack saw the Kill switch was pushed to 'off'.....
Check that first !!!!

Go to the library and read the service manual.

Or better yet, order one from a dealer.

Sounds like you're outta gas... Insert key into gas-cap, twist. Pull off gas-cap, set aside somewhere so it won't scratch paint. Pour in 3-5 gallons of gas, depending upon tank-size. Re-install gas-cap, lock. Turn ON the petcock to let gas flow into carbs. Crank over engine a couple of times and it should fire.

I bought a $8200 1-year old bike for $500 because the guy seized the engine. True, he did rev the hell out of it and never changed the oil, but that should just wear out the engine faster, not seize it. So, we check it out, starter just clicks, spinning the tyre in gear to turn the engine's no go. Push start it, hop on and let go of the clutch just slides the rear tyre... yep, engine's seized. So, I prepare to rebuild the engine, put the bike up on a stand. Unbolt the oil-pan to drain the oil and about 3- gallons of GASOLINE runs out! The petcock had failed and was leaking. The guy never turned it off either so gas just dripped and dripped through the carbs, combined with vapor-pressure on hot days and it just completely filled the engine with gas! I just changed the oil, replaced the petcock and I got a new bike! :)

That late a model bike probably has a vacuum operated petcock. It may or may not have a backup position to let you dry start.
Also if the bike has sat for a while the gas in the carbs has turned. You will need to remove the carbs, remove the bowls from the carbs to dump the old fuel, clean with carb cleaner if it is gummed up. Then put it all back together.
More info about the bike would be helpful. Like what model, for starters.

Yes this is a bicycle forum but it is FOO. If we can talk about what we had for lunch for twenty seven pages a guy can ask why his motorcyle will not start. Now if he was in the mechanic section you could give him a hard time. :)

Im almost positive the petcock on that bike has a vacuum bypass mode.
My Ninja had one but it was the 900. Im gonna say that the gas just got
below the reserve level and when he gets gas it will fire.
If its a 250 or 500 theres nothing that can go wrong with it  !

2005 ninja 636R.

No petcock.
Fuel Injected.
Holds about 4 gal.

There is a kill switch on the right handlebar grip. its red.

if the motor does not turn over smoothly, check the battery, use another car battery to jump start it.

Put 1/4 of a bottle of chevron fuel injector cleaner in the fuel tank and crank it for a while.

No choke lever on this bike, however there is an idle adjustment knob just below the seat cowl on the left side, try moving that around to help you get it started.

Make sure the kickstand is down, and the engine is in neutral, otherwise it wont start with the kickstand down and in gear. Double check the kickstand safety switch.. it could be broken and prevent the bike from starting.

So out of curiosity, anyone know at which post number this got moved to Foo? I'm curious what responses were from the bicycle mechanics forum.

I'd guess around BikerBoy's either before, on or right after it.

Hmm, a bit of investigating shows that posts 1-4 were in the bike mechanics forum, and the rest were in Foo. Note to self: Don't expect helpful answers to non-bicycle issues in the bike mechanics forum (as evidenced by posts 2-4). ;) :p

The advice about the kill switch seems pretty basic, but I once tore apart most of my motorcycle because I forgot to check the kill swith first.

At the most basic level you need gas, air, spark, and compression. If you get yourself a decent manual, then you will find basic set of troubleshooting steps that will allow you to find the source of your bike's problem or problems. It might be any of the thing mentioned in previous posts, something entirely different, or a combination thereof. I won't give you another goose to chase by suggesting any other possible problems. Your best bet is to get a manual, and follow the troubleshooting steps in a logical order.

Good luck!

Since it ran with starter-fluid (ether, don't breath, it'll dissolve your lungs from the inside out), we can assume that spark is fine. I would also think that the electronic safeties are working as well since the engine was actually running. This narrows it down to just fuel-delivery.

If it's easy to do, pull an injector and aim into a cup. Run the engine with starter-fluid, do you get fuel injected into the cup? This may point a finger at the fuel-pump, fuel-filter, fuel-lines, FPR, injector wires, injectors.... or it could just be outta gas... ;)

Then how the heck did he spray starter fluid down the carb?

Ok I admit I picking straws here. I haven't got any advice to add to what others have said other than to find a motorcycle forum (there are plenty of them) and/or take it into a mechanic. You might want to talk to the guy who sold it to you if you can, too. Did you test ride it before you bought it?

The 500 and 250 use carbs according to the dealer sites I went to. The OP never mentions the displacement. We can only hope his is not any bigger than the 500 twin. We can also hope that he can not get it started. :)

Hey guys, I just bought the 2006 Suzuki Hayabusa LE and I was wondering whether or not I should put goo in the tubes to prevent pinch flats.

If its either the 250 or 500 and your battery is good (ie the starter works), pull the plugs and clean them. They are most likely fouled with gas & oil. Happened to me with my former Ninja 2-fiddy. Fired right up i cleaned and regapped the plugs. If there ever was a bike that didnt like to sit for long periods not being used, its was that damn 250. Glad to be ride of it.
