- didn't think it would happen to me (actually, i thought it would happen to my riding buddy, who's kinda loose on the sharp turns, scraping his pedals)...

- we took a new road, and without thinking about hidden obstructions, ran into an unmarked speed bump at about 15 mph... the speed bump was totally invisible to me (not painted yellow, blended in with color of roadway)...

- he took the bump w/no probs (26x1.5s), but i went down instantly (700x23s)...

- road burns on right elbow and right knee... i picked myself up off the road, and thankfully no broken bones AFAIK...

- the Bell helmet (a brand new, two-week old Tourist) was cracked in front, in two places on right side, and throughout right quandrant... i went down on my right elbow, knew and right side of my head - hands never left the handlebar - it was that fast...

- considering what could have happened, the helmet was the best $50 investment ever!

Glad you're ok!

(pssst.... how's the bike? :))

Glad you're OK too. Helmets do protect.

Replace it now that it has been damaged for a new one. You may actually need it on as you continue reading this thread, be ready for some "how do you know it saved your life?, etc" ;) :)

(pssst.... how's the bike? :))

- bike is heavy duty (see sig linky)... just some scraped bar wrap, which i can replace easily... my right elbow, shoulder, and head took the brunt of the impact...

- i'm really glad i bought a 2lb bag of frozen stir-fry veggies last week... it worked great as a cold pack for my right shoulder...

- i will be hurting tomorrow, but thanks to some PBRs today, ibuprofen tomorrow, and a spare helmet i'll be back out riding tomorrow...

:-)

p.s. it helps to have a riding buddy at all times - that way you won't cry on the ride home...

:p :D
I hope it's not too bad in the morning! Keeping those muscles moving should help.

Enjoy the PBR!

1. I'm glad you're OK.
2. I think Bell will give you a discount on your replacement helmet if your current helmet is damaged in an accident. I remember reading literature about it in the package containing one of mynew Bell helmets. I'd look into it (http://www.bellbikehelmets.com/contactUs.asp).

Good post.

Why did you go down so fast? How high was this bump? Was there water or dirt on the bump?

A cracked helmet doesnt necesarilly mean it "worked", it could mean that it failed, thus, the crack. Noone will really be able to tell if it did indeed saved your life. But if you believe that it indeed saved your life, more power to you. And no, I won't turn this into an anti-helmet/pro-helmet flamefest debate so I won't respond to posts regarding my statements above.

Glad you're ok, though.

YEAH! Better your head than the stryofoam! Wait... um, oh, I take that back. got caught up in the rhetoric.

Glad you are okay. I'll bet you hurt more tomorrow, but good its going to be in the shoulder, and that the crash wasn't worse.

I ran my head smack into a windshield with a virtually new helmet at high speed last summer. It kind of felt good, in retrospect, to have been wearing a helmet that was just replaced on a regular replacement schedule, instead of a crusty piece of fossilized styro from 1988. Skid Lid, anyone?

Good post.

- that is a GREAT question! and one i'm asking myself... after the crash, my buddy and i rode down to the end of the road and then back again... i cannot, for the life of me, understand how i went down when going over the speed bump... it was one of those thin, high bumps, not a sloping speed bump...

- oh, and BTW, the helmet was a Bell Metropolis, not a 'Tourist'... (i must have been still kinda frazzled when i posted)...

- i'm feeling good now, especially after application of a 2lb bag of frozen veggies to my right shoulder and several PBRs... i'll be back in the saddle tomorrow!

- thanks to all for tips, hints, tricks, and traps regarding helmets...

- i'll check into the Bell info - you'd think a large corp would want to hear/record/research success stories with their products!

- and yes, the helmet is definitely destroyed - cracked and split across the right quadrant in multiple places... thank you, modern foam extrusions!

:-)

I always wear a helmet. I hope I never damage one. Glad yours took the hit rather than your head.

Y'know, the helmet isn't supposed to break up. It works by crushing.

They do break, but the manafacturers build in various types of internal and external reinforcement to try to prevent it. In the best of all possible worlds a helmet would not break in the field, just crush where necessary.

The fact that some helmets still break in the field indicates that there is more work to do in this area.

In the best of all possible worlds ....

Well, if that's not a Panglossian world view I don't know what one is....

Helmets aid in injury prevention, despite their flaws....

closetbiker

Yeah, but I'm nothing if not an optimist. Unfortunately, I'm also a realist. They do aid, but I doubt if it saved his life.

Linux, gald no marbles got lost.

Years ago a friend and I were riding on a quiet country club road. I bunny hopped the speed bump, and my friend, I guess tried to do the same, but hit the bump hard with his front wheel, (he hopped too soon). Bam he was down.

My guess is that since you had no idea it was there, you where holding lightly on the bars and the force of the bump tore the bars out of your hands and bam you went down.

Is the metro the helmet with the blinkie mount on the back? I just bought one as well if it is. It looks like there are fewer air holes in it, makes me think that it cracked because there is more plastic shell. What was the temperature at the time?

Gee, I'm jumping in. Clearly if the helmet hadn't dulled his senses, tired his neck, and given him a false sense of security, he wouldn't have fallen at all.

1. i think your idea about what happened is what happened...

2. yep, the metropolis has the blinkie/accessory mount on back, as well as a recessed clip mount on the visor for a flip-down mirror (a feature i like)

3. no fewer airholes that another bell and giro i have... air temp at time of 'operator down' was about 75F
