Hey I haven't seen it asked out plain so here goes what's your dream tour?

Mine is going from the Mouth of the Mississippi to where it starts then buying a canoe and coming home on the river.......then writing a book about the experience, having Hollywood buy the rights to the movie, ....becoming rich and famous...........oh oh....wow went daydreaming there at the end...sorry :)

Sunshine, tailwinds, campsites nestled by the side of a stream with mountain views and nobody around (but, of course, a nice cafe/store only a mile away). What else? Ice cream whenever you wish, free Swedish massages at the top of every pass, clothing-optional hot springs - - uh-oh - - I think I'm getting a little carried away here.

Around the world!

I'd like to cycle in every country of the world. I realize that many countries are closed and difficult to get into, but this is a "dream tour", right? :D

The reality is that I am taking steps right now to make as much of that dream come true. :)

Wow, this is a dangerous.. er, uh... great question ;) . I haven't done any long tours yet, but I love riding around out in the middle of nowhere and exploring new roads. I am planning to do a multi-month tour this summer on the trans america and northern tier with a couple of week or so tours prior to the big one. If those go well, I think the ultimate tour would be to ride to Alaska, and if I could ride that far, I may just as well turn around and head back down the pacific coast until I get to the southern tip of Chile. And if I could ride that far, etc, etc, etc, etc....

There is just something about arriving in a new place by bicycle. I haven't quite picked out what exactly it is yet that I love about it, but there is definitely something there. I think time must stand still when I'm on a bike or something. You know, that probably is what it is. A bicycle is the closest thing to a time machine that will ever be invented. We are surrounded by cell phones and automobiles and big city concrete jungles and televisions and then you get on your bike, ride for 15 or 25 or 40 minutes and before you know it you are in a place where it's like none of that stuff has even been invented yet.

And then if you stop pedaling and get off your bike, everything is silent. Everytime I stop riding when I'm out in the country, I pause and just soak up as much of the silence as I can before I continue adjusting the brakes, or fishing out the powerbar, or whatever. I love it.

My dream ride is to do the northern tier, pacific coast, the southern tier and back up the atlantic coast all in one ride. Probably take an entire year or so to do it right. Now, that would be a trip!

A ride I'd love to do one day would bring me from Amsterdam to Singapour. Right now the road is a bit difficult due to various political issues but not impossible. For it to be a dream tour, my girlfriend would have to come with me... but even without her it would be a great tour... not sure I can ever do it though but I can always dream about it!

Ushuaia, Terra del Fuego to Inuvik, NWT.

It'll never happen but thats the "fantasy dream" ride. The "reality dream" ride is to cross Canada. Thats gotta wait a few years until I quit.

That's what I was thinking, the entire perimeter of the U.S. except I would leave from home in Denver and head south to the southern tier route and then make the loop around the country and then back up to home. That's a long one so I'll have to just keep on dreaming for now.

From which of Twains writings was the quote above taken?

My 7th grade teacher introduced us to Twain and Marco Polo. Were my favorite books for years, recently found old copies and am re-reading both

The northern Roman frontier from the North Sea to the Black Sea. Starting next month! I would also like to bike in all the countries of the world if only just to collect the little flag stickers from each one.

I've started collecting little pins from the various places I've been. I put them onto my handlebar bag where I can see them when I ride. :)

New Zealand--road and mountain.

Hey Saltheart--you should check out Jonathan Raban's Old Glory for a mississippi journey book. And if you like reading more about River travel, check out William Least Heat-Moon's River Horse. He did a cross-country trip primarily by river. A little slow reading, but river travel isnt' the fastest anyway!

After I am done grad studies and have some debts paid off or in "management stage", I am taking off from Saskatoon heading to the West Coast (Northern B.C. or Alaska) then if it isn't too late in the year, South and back East covering the southern portion of Canada and then head south into the states and hopefully keep going.........see where I end up in a couple of years after that.......no plans after that, just biking somewhere else.....overseas probably.

I've always fancied doing Arctic Circle to the Med, because its downhill all the way :).

I should spend more time touring (ratherthan just riding) in Scotland, and do want to do LEJOG at some point.

Japan too, and Eastern Europe, and I'd like to ridefrom Alaska to South America - hell, I'll just have to try to live longer!

Start in Bavaria, to Switzerland, to Italy - clockwise circumnavigation then generally follow the Mediterranean to near Gibraltar. Then tour the rest of Spain, then France, then England, Scotland & Ireland. Hop a boat to Newfoundland, tour the Canadian Maritime provinces - follow the St Lawrence and follow Lake Ontario to Niagra Falls (no I'm not going over the falls!), then go to the Finger Lakes, and then head South to home and a much needed shower. Then I'd ride the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Georgia, and come back up the Shenandoah Valley, and back to home. Then after I change the tires...

I initially thought about this nearly 20 years ago, and if I ever am in a position to be able to do it will try.

Ponta de Sagres, Portugal - Vladivostok, Russia

I even started looking at which towns/cities I would need to visit on the way. Must see if i can find my notes again.

Thanks for remining me of this.

To: Ken Cummings, I was discussing the Lands End to John O'Groats route with a friend last night, and if it wasn't for how quickly he wants to do it I would probably be joining him

For 35 years I had a dream to ride in Patagonia. I finally went last year.

So I rode my dream

Now I am starting to dream of The Friendship Highway and other places.

I can't afford to wait another 35 years

On another bike forum I asked a similar question
"A route to do before you die"

My dream tour would be leaving from home in the summer and it goes something like this:

- along the north shore of the St-Lawrence river
- down the west coast of Newfounland
- the rest of atlantic Canada
- east coast of USA, with parts in the Appalachians during fall
- Across USA in the winter
- Up north in the Rockies all the way up to Alaska (spring and summer)
- Down the coast to Mexico in late summer/fall
- South America with lots of riding around to wait out the southern winter.

That would take a good 2 years, with lots and lots of photos. I don't see the day when I can do this so I have a few 1 month tours that are a bit more realistic: Atlantic Canada, Alaska and South America (not sure where to go yet).

yeah man, I'm definately doing that after I graduate college. I'll be starting in Seattle and doing the northern tier first. By then I'll already have done the pacific coast twice on bike and once on foot (at least I want to do the Pacific crest trail by then) and it'll be my last leg so I'm sure that'd be my most trying experience (probably being sick of it) but at least I'll be going in a different direction this time.

USA perimeter, a year trip.

Cross Canada in lieu of Northern Tier as an option.
Where and when to start?
clock wise or counter?
For me it would be a May start, straight North from my home in Kentucky through the Great Lakes to Canada, hang a left and pedal until I hit salt water. Specifically to Prince Rupert, take a cruise down to Vancouver, and back on the bike. Do the West coast to San Fransisco, then inland for the remainder of California. Hit the Mexican border by late October, take another left and a slow ride across the sunny side of the US to Key west. A hold over there under a palm tree waiting for the seasons to allow the trip north to Virgina and the start of the Transam. One last left on the Transam, back home about June. Yes I have been thinking about this a lot!

Alaska to Tierra del fuego
Start in mid June with an Ipod filled with Spanish lessons, learn enough by Mexico, end trip in Tierra del Fuego approx. 1 year later, mid summer near the opposite pole.
