Classic & Vintage - Sachs Brifter Question

I picked up a set of Sachs brifters at the Seattle Swap meet and used them to finish the build on one of my Titan frames. Did the first ride today and was pleased it indexed perfectly with the 8 speed Campy Casette (I know it was intended for Shimano), but there is one problem. It seems to have only 7 speeds. It clicks up the cogs smoothly but stops at # 7. I can get it onto #8 when I push the lever but there isn't a click & when I release, the chain drops back onto #7 cog. I only paid $10.00 so this isn't a big issue, just wondering about the cause. Is this problem from wear or did they make these in 7 speed? I just assumed they were 8 or 9 speed. I will play around with it some more this weekend. Any suggestions?

At this point, the only surefire test is a rundown of the index sans any cable connection. If the left and right limits (rear mech and cassette) are solid, I would just release the cable at the smallest rear cog, ratchet that modafrack down to the ground and start 'a countin'.

If it is a 7....well, that would suck! I guess that means one less cog to clean.

And remember that if you count seven clicks, that is an 8-speed shifter. If your derailleur limit stops are misadjusted, the derailleur won't let you get the last click. That's why Erzulis says to try the shifter disconnected. And yeah, they made seven-speed brifters for a little while. Always seems to be demand for 'em on eBay too.

I am shocked! Shocked! This is the C & V forum lads. What's this of such newfangled contraptions as brifters?! Next I know, you'll be answering folks wanting to know about Carbon Fiber kickstands. 'Tis a slippery slope - the devil's road - and I shan't be following you down it. :D

wait...didn't Sachs go down in bankruptcy/takeover a while ago? I think that, in keeping with other greats like Simplex and Peugeot, company failure automatically qualifies you for appropriate content. Brifters, power-stroke cranks, biopace chainrings, threadless headsets...all mere vagaries of fashion.

Thanks all! Shifters are 8 speed & like all my older bikes, benefited greatly from cleaning, lubrication & the suggested derailleur adjustment. They are well worn(shift smoothly, but almost silent). Work fine now. Don
