Hi,

I'm going to be doing a race that is mostly paved road with a bit of dirt road thrown in for fun. If it's dry I'm thinking regular road tires will be fine, but if it gets sloppy wet I'll want some extra traction. Is there anything with a fast rolling center, a bit of side knobby, and comes in a 28? That's what I hear it needs to be to fit my '06 Allez Pro.

Thanks in advance!

Don

Go to cyclingnews.com and check out the tech section where they take a close-up look at the bikes used by the pros at Paris-Roubaix. There are some races in Europe that have unpaved road sections, but the riders are using wider, treaded road racing tires instead of scaled-down cyclocross tires.

something like a touring tire might be right for you----i saw this http://www.biketiresdirect.com/productdetail.asp?p=SCMAR&tnum=148063&c=197302

that might suit your needs, they had some others as well, that looked like they might work.

the guys in paris roubaix i dont think are using any special tread, maybe a wider tire like 25-28 mm but nothing else, they just have awesome handling skills.

If you can find them:

Specialized Tri- Cross Comp. 28cm, knobby.

But I would recommend that you just ride your "regular" tires for your road with a little dirt race. I just did a knarly "mostly road" dirt road race in LA and my 23c's were just fine. The kevlar sides took a beating but kept on rolling.

Just go pick your favorite mountain bike trail. Ride it on your road bike. Then race and you'll be fine with your MTB bike handling skills for any squirrelly ol dirt they can throw at you.

And if it's raining at the time of your race...well...get wet and have fun.
