Does anybody have some recommendations for a decent rear rack & taillight combination? I don't need the best rack available because I'm not doing any heavy duty touring, so it could be steel or aluminum.
The problem I've had so far is in trying to find a rack that is designed for, or at the very least accepts a permanently mounted taillight, and then finding a light that attaches. It seems everything I see is designed to mount to a seat post, or has a flimsy clip style mount.

I have a blackburn rack. Works well.
However, it does not have a mounting point for a rear light.
But that is a common issue. There are multiple methods of mounting rear lights. You can purchase reflector holders designed for a rack mount, use zip ties, or my method was to use part of a used tube between the mounting clamp and the rear rack.

I run a TL-LD1000. Wonderful light.

Any rear rack and a trunk bag. almost all trunkbags have a loop to attach a clip on blinkie. This is the best set up I've found. I've killed every other tailight set up I have tried.

I have a home made, aluminum rear rack.
I drilled a hole in the middle of the back crossbar and screwed a light clip into it.

The best place for a rear LED/reflector is bolted onto a plate which is welded to the rear of the rack, below the shelf. No other position comes close for convenience and reliability. It is also pretty theft-proof.
Busch & Müller 4D Toplight on a Tubus rack is a nice, but pricy example

I have a Trek back rack (http://store.trekbikes.com/jump.jsp?itemID=26&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C35%2C186&iProductID=26&bShopOnline=0). On the back bar I mounted 2 Planet bike brt7s (http://www.planetbike.com/rearlights.html#) using the seatstay mounts. Use the thick rubber and wrap electrical tape on the rack where you mount the mount for the light. They are sideways and sticking out to the sides to give others a wide view. Never had a problem and my co-workers always mention that there is no way to miss me.

BTW: this may be illegal to have the lights side by side but no cop that I have passed ever stoped me.

I agree completely with the TL-LD1000 for a tail light. I have mine bolted on a Delta rack I bought from Bike Tools Etc. I've toured and commute everyday with no problems.

Actually, it is only illegal if they are flashing out of sequence. If you can set them to blink in unison or set them on constant mode, it's perfectly fine. They reserve the out of sync flashing for emergency vehicles.

Along with the light on the top of my rack, I have one on my seatpost and one on each chainstay. The one on the rack is the only one I set to blink. The others are on constant mode.

I use a TL-LD 1000, I agree with everyone else that it's an excellent light. I bought a mounting bracket from Peter White Cycles and took a drill to my Blackburn MTB rack to make it work.

Old Blackburn "trailrack". Solid aluminum tubing. Shelf is rivetted on. There is screw hole at the back of the shelf. I have a home-made reflector bracket mounted under the shelf using this screw hole.

My home-brew tail light hangs from my seat.

I have a cheap Topeak rack which I like because it was cheap and I got a Topeak trunk bag which slides on and hooks in with their special attachment system. It is super fast and convenient which I like and relatively cheap. It has a spot to mount a light. I got a Blackburn 3.0 which mounted right up to it with no modification. I also bought a TL-1000 like everyone else that I mount to my seatpost when I'm not carrying my bag or on my trunk bag when I am.

What's the problem with mounting the light to the seatpost? It's a little higher, but it's harder to damage. In any case, you should be able to just go to a hardware store and find stuff that will allow you to fashion a bracket.

As far as lights go, I use the NiteRider universal taillight. It costs more than the TL-1000 that everyone likes, but it's a great option if you have any interest in the NR headlights (the same battery pack powers the head and tail lights).

What's the problem with mounting the light to the seatpost?
Not enough seatpost exposed to mount a light below my underseat bag.
