Triathlon - How Often Do You Skip A Planned Workout?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I currently have a 6 day a week, 10 workout/week plan. Swim 2x, Bike 4x and Run 4x a week. However, due to a variety of reasons, I usually have to skip 1-2 workouts a week. It really frustrates me, so I wanted your feedback to see if this is normal or if I'm in the same boat as everyone else. How often do you skip your planned workouts?
Some common reasons why I may find myself skipping a workout:
1. Family commitments
2. Work commitments
3. Bad weather
4. Too tired/overtrained/sick

Great reasons listed for skipping workouts. My typical week is swim 5x, bike 4x, and run 4x. I use #1 at least once per week and try not to get frustrated but that is easier said then done :)

I'd say that almost every week something comes up where I have to miss a workout. I travel a ton and that really effects the workouts...especially swims. Last year I was fanatical about getting them all in...even racking up 3 or more to "make-up" for missed workouts. My coach misses on average of 1 - 2 days every week. He's heading to Hawaii this year and will finish around 10 hours or less. I bring this up because it doesn't bother him at all...and it used to drive me nuts. This year, I have much less stress about missing workouts. A little unexpected, unscheduled rest sometimes is the secret ingredient to prevent overtraining...which I was guilty of last year. So don't sweat it. If you get one key run, swim and bike workout in per week....the rest is filler anyway.

Nice to hear that even the really fast guys skip workouts too. I'm beginning to cut myself a little slack for my missed workouts and it's encouraging to hear that I'm not the only one.
Every Monday goddamn morning at exactly 5:50a.m. I miss my run and then try to make it up the rest of the week. Tried pulling the same this morning but my coach wasn't having it she kicked my butt right out of bed(yeah my coach is my fiance)
Also, I try an replace workouts, miss a swim = upper body lifting. Miss a run = run to swim workout and home.
Its impossible to hit every workout every week, but it is also a slipper slope, so I'm going to go run...

Life happens. I end up skipping at least one to two workouts/ week. I used to make myself crazy about it and ended up frustrated. The workouts I did get in weren't quality workouts. I ended up rushing through everything. Now I do what I can and try not to sweat it.

Last year (my first year doing tri's) I rarely if ever skipped a workout. When I did it drove me nuts. THis was bad. My wife became very pissed off and distant. I was tired all the time. I developed a chonic hip problem (which may or may not have been due to overtraining).
This year I have been much more flexible. I miss a few workouts each week. For instance, this week I only got in one swim. I like to get in three or at least two. Oh well. Next week if I have to skip workouts I'll arrange things so I miss a bike or run instead of a swim. What is happening, is that I am rotating having big biking weeks (relatively) followed by big running weeks, big swimming weeks and big weight lifting weeks. I also now view rest as a workout.
So far, I feel very energized. My legs feel fresher. My relationship with my wife is much better. I think I am getting better quality workouts. I never get on my bike now with my legs feeling sore.
Now, will I be faster? I don't know and I'm not sure that I care. If life is better and I am happier and my family life is better I don't think it matters whether I swim 1500 meters in 26 minutes instead of 25 minutes.
