I am new to track riding/racing and have a set of the Bontrager Aero Track wheels. Are these decent wheels for a novice on the track? They have low spoke count, 16 I believe, and seem to be pretty strong. Are these wheels just a marketing thing that Bontrager uses or are they real track wheels? I did not have any problems with them today on the track today but being my first day on the track I had other things that I was concentrating on like not sliding down the 44 degree embankment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They should be fine as long as you are not to big of a rider.
I go 200+ so have been told to stay away from low spoke count wheels.

44 degrees banks arent too steep (after a few days u'll see them kind'a flat). u wont fall from there i think. Btw going in the middle or upper part of the track is actually easier to ride than in the lower part of the banks? why? think it... Try to force yourself to ride slow or slower in that way u'll know the tolerances of your bike, your wheels and the track. After the 1st fall because u just slipped down for going too slow u'll get recorded the minimum speed u have to go. I love going slow, that makes people gets nervious... I think its because I know my bike and my tires, besides is easier to know when the bike is just at the limit of slipping down... I started doing track at 12 years old anyways...
Good luck :)

Ive seen those wheels in action. For somone my size not a chance in hell unless as a windy day persuit wheel on an open track. Even the girl racing on them at FCV said they were flexing. But on 44 degree you should be ok.

Thanks for the replies. Until I get some tubular wheels and tires, I decided to use my Velocity Deep V track wheels with Vittoria Open Corsa CX EVO tires. For some reason I feel more confident on a 28 spoke wheel than on a 16 spoke wheelset.
What type of tubular wheels should I be looking at? Alot of Cat 4 racers at my track use the Cane Creek Volos. I want something different.

At our local track (Fcv) thers only a few kinds of wheels that will actualy hold up to a sprint and 50degree bank. Most of us are running 36 hole high flange hubs with Mavic Reflex rims or the Ambrosio version. The reflex rim is nice for glueing. It has a stepped seat in it and if you use a very good tubie the centering process is almost nil. I mounted Vittoria Pista EVO Cs and as soon as i put any air in them they were straight!
Hubwise cartridge bearings are nice but you cannot duplicate the feel of a high quality ball bearing hub like a Dura-Ace or Suzue Promax. A low spoke areo wheelset looks cool no doubt, but personaly I think the vintage look is pretty cool aswell. Plus they have better durability if your a asfault beaver.

if your a asfault beaver.
Is that a Canadianism? It conjures a funny image of teeth on pavement.
