Is it me or does this place crawl? I just joined a couple days ago and I like it a lot but it is soooooo slow. I have a Hi Speed cable connection and this is by far the slowest loading forum I have been on. Is this normal for this site or is it because of the server switch thing that is going on or what?

Thanks

Hmmmm it just took about a minute and a half after I hit post before this posted up.

The new server has not yet been optimized for the traffic. I hope to have the site flying rather soon. :)

Good luck with the server. For another data point, I've been getting a lot of timeouts lately.

I've been getting an immense amount of timeouts. And really, really slow loading times. Sometimes I even go over to Cyclingforums.com when it's not working over here *tear* don't hurt me. I didn't want to do it.

edit:
and I got this just now when I tried to get to the bikeforums.net main page.

The forums have been and still are completely and 100% unusable. Pages take 1-3 minutes to load. Sometimes they don't even load at all. All new posts I've tried to create have caused an error saying some invalid id was specified.

I've been getting about 25% successful posting today.

Since about 6:00pm today, things are speeding up. Haven't gotten a white-page (a timeout??) and most pages loading pretty quickly. Major improvement since last night.

While it's better than it has been, it's still pretty slow.

That last 'timeout' episode was very very annoying. Its not the speed, its the realiablity that the pages will actualy load and not timeout. Sometimes its fine, other times its not. I can't be bothered coming back here, untill this is fixed.

Joe - can you give us an idea of what the problem is? It took me five attempts (waiting a full minute for each to fail with a timeout) just to get to this page.
I'm going through a proxy, so I see timeout errors like this:

Error

The requested item could not be loaded by the proxy.

Document contains no data

We'll see how many times I'll have to retry posting before it will work. The problem is that sometimes you get an error, but it did post. And sometimes the error happens before the post, and there is no way to know, except to try to reload the page, which is likely to result in another error. That's why we are seeing so many duplicate (and triplicate and quadruplicate) posts - then folks don't have the time to delete (because those attempts result in errors too).

One more thing. Ever since the "upgrade" all the little clickable icons like B for bold and I for Italics and U for Underline have been nonresponsive. This is true for all the smiley face icons when you "Go Advanced" too. Anyone else having this problem in addition to the slowness and timeouts?

Wow, that one posted in 2 seconds!

All of a sudden we're flying! (but the clickable icons still do nothing)

This is tough..the forum is pretty much unusable.
I'm sure it will get straightened out soon

Spoke too soon. Slowness and errors are back again.

It's weird how there are spurts of good performance and then long stretches of poor performance and errors.

It is odd it works at lightening speed then not at all. I am able to post replies but not start any new threads. I sure it will all work out in the end. Thanks for the hard work Joe!!

Well, the system was down for a while, now it's back up, but still very slow at the moment.

I took the server off line to add a 2nd nic card to the current server. This will allow me to connect two servers together to run the forums, a front end web server (a dual xeon 2.66 w/ 2 gig of ram) and a database only server (dual opteron 244's w/ 4 gig of ram).

Both servers are now online and talking to each other, but only one is in use. Both should be working together in the next day or two.

But why is it so slow and problematic today and for the last week as compared to say 3 weeks ago?

Man, it's flying at the moment!

It seems that in the middle of the day, it's near impossible to get this site to load...early in the AM and in the later evening (when usage is lower I am guessing) it is reaasonable.

I tried to get to the road forum and it timed out five times in a row...

Maybe we should all get more work done...;)

But I'm in the bike biz (sometimes), so that's my excuse...:D
