Introductions - Hello from Hartford

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey. My name is Samui. (Well...it's not my legal name. People just call me that. Or they call me Sammy, or Sam, or whatever.) Anyways, yeah...I ride my bike a lot - mostly to and from work. Mostly, from Hartford, through Wethersfield, and to Rocky Hill - about a 6.5-mile commute. I take the back roads mostly, avoiding Silas Deane Highway like it's the plague. I'm a wuss, and I use the sidewalks. A lot of drivers are jerks here, and I almost got plowed by several of them. A couple times it was due to my brakes failing, other times it was due to idiots.
I come to these forums in hopes of being able to do some budget mods to my current bike (It's a Schwinn...something or other). I plan on getting a car soon after I get my license, but for the time being, I'll be using a bike for my commute, as it's all I really have. So, I want to make it awesome. =p
So...yeah. Hi, everybody. ^^;
Welcome to the forums, Samui, Sammy, Sam, Whatever,
Maybe you can answer a question for me that has come up this very day. Have you any opinions on good or bad bike shops in & near Hartford? I am going to be travelling and I might need to ask one of them to partially dismantle and pack a bike for me so I can take it on bus, train and plane. If you don't know, maybe someone else who reads this thread can make a recommendation.

I highly recommend Ray Taksar's bike shop on Franklin Ave. I went there once for a tune-up on my other bike which now sits in the back of my workplace due to the rear gear-shift cable being popped out (how that happened is beyond me). It is, in fact, the only shop I know of in or near Hartford. I don't go there much, though...since the area is kinda sketchy. (I get some bad vibes from the people around there).

Newington Cycle in Newington, CT (about 5 miles from Hartford). Been in business for many years. Trek, Lemond, Cannondale, etc.

There's also Cycling Concepts in Cromwell, that's about 6 or 7 miles from Hartford. I haven't been there before, though. Too far for me to go to get my bike fixed. =P
