Fifty Plus (50+) - Is this a sign?

Last night, Linda and I get home from work at around 5:00p, rush to get the bikes ready for our ride... get the battery packs for the lights mounted, check the air, give the bikes a quick look over, grab and fill the water bottles, strap the 'puters on. Get changed and ready for the ride... leg warmers, two layers on top (it's still in the low 40's here), gloves (liner and long fingers), two pairs of socks, shoes, shoe covers, head cover, etc. and we're finally ready to go.

We head out of the house, make a right out into traffic onto the main street and away we go!

I see a biker coming up quickly from behind and as he pulls up, we exchange greetings and small talk. I think I recognise him, so I ask if I know him from perhaps the local club rides. "TCBC?", I ask. "Yes. Thursday night rides", says he. I ask his name and in the course of the conversation, I recognise him as one of the local cycling advocates - you know, safety, more and better bike paths, safer streets with more lanes for cyclists, etc.

So, we continue chatting for another mile and a half until he peels off to go on his route and Linda and I head off on the remainder of our nightly ride. And as he heads off, Linda and I chat that it's a good thing to have folks like him and that it's good for cycling.

Now we're about 2.5 miles into our ride, Linda looks at me and asks "Where's your helmet?".

Does this qualify as a "senior moment"?

1) Yes

2) I thought I left my raincoat on a fence post on a ride, so I bought another one. Last night I found the first one in the house under a pile of laundry.

3) The LBS owner forgets his helmet once in a while. On his group rides.

Perhaps an unconscious recognition that most 50Plus riders are hardheaded, knuckleheaded, wrongheaded, blockheaded, pointyheaded.....in addition to often being bald-headed.

I would blame Linda- Has she taken out a new policy on you recently?

As one who has senior moments I've learned that just before the ride isn't the time to be rushing to get ready. I now get ready for the next ride as soon as I finish the current ride. I'm pleased to say that since I started this I haven't forgotten anything (including charging batteries).

Actually, my reply was something along the lines of "Why didn't you tell me when we left?".

It didn't work, as she didn't seem to feel one bit guilty :)

+1 Same here, I look for the mirror and if it's not there, neither is the helmet. I wouldn't worry about it being a "senior" moment. I'd only start worry if I was fully dressed to ride, helmet on, standing at the front door, and then trying to remember what it was I was planning to do.... Oh, yeah go for a ride.

Yep. I felt like an idiot when I discovered the helmet was missing. Not to mention naked all the way home!

The mirror I use is glasses mounted (it's a take-a-look mirror), and with the head cover, everything "felt" like it was there.

Naw, no guilt here. I enjoyed the extra miles. Although Steve did suck my wheel for the first 1.5 miles while he socialized with the other cyclist. Oh well...I guess I have to pull sometime:D. Or maybe Steve needed that draft so he could socialize...and they say us Women are bad...

Not quite the reply I expected. Should have been "He's over 50 and having senior moments all the time- and he's getting slow on the bike". Sounds as though he needs a younger woman to look after him in his Difficult years.

Cheese flavour--- Not taking sides- but learnt many years ago, it is better to stay on the womans side- They cook better and have smaller feet.

Two days ago:

1. I could NOT find my light leggings and favorite long-sleeved jersey with hood. I looked and looked. Nowhere to be found in the entire house. SO, I got my other (least favorite long-sleeved jersey) and heavy leggings and put the jersey on. Extremely frustrating and not a good omen.

2. Of course, then I found them right where my wife had hid them from me - underneath a box she had put on a chair where I had conveniently left them for my next ride. Of course, the chair happened to be a dining room chair, but no matter! However, I already had my least favorite jersey on, so I wasn't going to change that. I did put the light leggings on, though.

3. So out the door into the garage, check the bike out and zoom away. Ouch. The wind was terrible and absolutely freezing. BUt, I thought, "I will warm up if I pedal hard enough." Got .5 miles away and felt my head - no helmet!

4. Back to the house to get the helmet and put the heavy leggings over the light leggings.

5. Back on my way. I was going to meet the wife for lunch, so I checked for my wallet. .5 miles down the trail, back to the house to pick up my wallet.

6. Couldn't find my wallet. Looked and looked. So, I called the wife to cancel lunch, and kept looking. I looked and looked, and !BEHOLD!, it was in my pants pocket of the pants I forgot I had worn the day before.

7. Called the wife again and said the lunch was still on, pedaled mightily into the wind, and finally met her at Subway.

I am not having "senior moments" I am having "senior days!"
