Okay.

1. I just purchased a set of hair clippers for $38.00.

2. It takes about 5 minutes to cut my hair because I get a buzz cut - 1/8 inch all over, and there is not a lot to cut.

3. I have been getting a haircut every 4 weeks for $12.95 plus tip - about $14.00 (I know - I am cheap).

4. I successfully cut my own hair today, giving myself a similar buzz cut.

Haircuts will probably increase in price 5% per year.

So,

$14.00 x 13 haircuts per year = $182 (-$38.00) = $144 saved the first year.

Not even considering the 5% inflation, I will have saved $1,782 the first 10 years. Throw in the 5% inflation, and I will be over $2,000 saved by cutting my own hair.

So, if I buy a new $2,000 bike today, I will have it paid for in less than 10 years, plus I will have gotten to ride it all these years.

Think my wife will buy that argument? :D

I like the way you think!

I don't think that arguement would hold up with your wife, UNLESS you also signed an agreement not to buy another bike for ten years. Are you willing to do that?

Too bad you weren't getting your hair cut every 2 weeks.. you could be saving $364 (-$38.00) = $326.00 the first year and uh...well...uh...you guys do the rest of the math.

At any rate, it sounds like a plan to me. I never argue with sound logic.

Found 11 cents on my last ride. Keep picking up that loose change and the total cost will go down.

Cant see anything wrong in your reasoning. Only problem is if the wife decides to do the same and cuts out cooking meals, and gives you bread and water for the duration of the 10 years, as the extra cost in food will pay for her lavish lifestyle that she will be able to take up with her savings

Your logic is irrefutable. If for some unimaginable reason she starts to fuss, you can offer to cut the payback time considerably by doing her hair as well. I cannot recall when my wife has left the beauty parlor without getting 2 haircuts. The usual trim, wash, perm, set, etc. etc and the other to the wallet. You are now experienced. Many many fine looking movie stars have the very short haircut. Very European.

When you factored your costs, you left out the time value of money (ie. compounding). In essence you have cut the real cost of the bike in half AND you have the benefit of excercise in the meantime, You will be able to better utilize your investment now than you would ten years from now (push your equipment, versus try to bring your body back up to some level of fitness to enjoy your equipment) Clearly the correct decision.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission.

My wife would NEVER believe every two weeks. She knows how I HATE to go to the latest "Super Cuts" or "Cute Curls" or "Quick Clips" or whatever, where you are their instant friend and they call you by your first name upon your very first visit (something we used to reserve until you actually knew a person - as a sign of respect. It used to be that when they asked me my first name, I would say "Doctor" but my wife made me stop that.)

Anyway, my totally shaggy hair at the end of my four weeks period would belie my going for a haircut every two weeks.

A far as using the current time value of money, I already accounted for that in recognizing the effects of inflation on my estimated savings. You can't have it both ways, now - err! well . . . , maybe I could!

You neglected to include the gas and/or car expense to get your hair cut as well as the time needed to do so. These items should help to lower your payout time considerably.

I ride my bike or walk to get my hair cut. But, the time is significant. Let's see - I value myself at about $250 per hour - it could add up.:D Thanks. I will put it in the formula.

Man, who are you guys married to? I can't imagine being married to someone who would require that much justification for my purchasing something that would give me so much pleasure. I mean doesn't the formula go: I have great pleasure in my life, hence I give great pleasure to others. Then again this is my second marriage.

I'm divorced as well, as my problem is coming up with rationalizations that I can live with! I find myself saying spend, and then I'm saying save, and back and forth.

And Dnvr, I have one of those hair trimmers, and have been giving myself buzz cuts (and longer) for about a year. It's not that hard, except once in a while I need my daughter to sort of "help out" in the back.

It's a joke - a put on. Just for fun. Check out the smilies - they are all over the place. :D :D :D :D

In actuality, my wife will let me purchase anything reasonable that helps me with whatever. And, as the owner of 3 bikes, I don't really need anymore right now - especially after the upgraded wheels.

Just my rather perverted sense of humor.

I figured it was, which is why I put my last line in my response. Hope no offense was taken.

Not a chance! She's going to factor in your rate of hair loss and figure that in 5 years you won't need anymore hair cuts at all. Then, since you won't be able to save enough in only 5 years to cover your bike anyway, she'll spend the money on new shoes insted.

A better plan would have been to make her think that it was her idea. Tell her that you really, really like the job that Bambi does when she cuts your hair but that you feel guilty spending all of that money for hair cuts when you're also planning a new bike purchase. Then ask if your wife has any ideas or advice about which one you should cut out. Heck, doing it my way your wife would probably even pay for the hair clippers.

It looks like everyone is overthinking this. Here is what you do: Go to you lbs, pick out the bike you want, give them your Visa card and ride off with the new bike. How hard is that?

Oh, when the Visa bill comes, if your wife looks at it, just say "There must be some mistake, I'll call them and straighten it out."

About paying the Visa bill.....well, I did the first four steps (go to lbs, pick out bike, pay with Visa, tell wife a story), can't you do at least one thing yourself?

Yes, with Mastercard. Then I pay that bill with AMEX, then Diners Club, then another Visa and so on. After a rotation of 20 cards, I start back with the original card. :D
I think this is how the government works.

Rechargeable so I don't have that annoying electric cord. Besides, I was always an easy mark! :D

I figure I got about 300 haircuts left, and that is about 13 cents a cut! :)

I haven't "paid" for a haircut since 1976 when my barber retired. :D

My wife has cut my hair as well as all of our 4 boys (all grown now)
so I've saved a bundle. :p My wife goes to get her hair done once a
month with all the savings left for "other" things. In that time we've
worn out 3 clippers with the 4th just being purchased recently.
