so do people commute in bike shorts and then change? i'd like to commute but i've had problems with saddle sores and i don't think there's anywhere i can shower at work.

I change. I also try to take a shower when I get to my destination if it is a decent distance.
I believe that leaving the bike shorts on only gives you more problems with microbials.

Clean bike shorts that fit well, clean body, BodyGlide. #1 & #3 are obvious. #2... lots of commuters swear by baby wipes, as do some thru-hikers too, I hear. IME, though, if I shower in the morning before riding to work (do it 99% of the time duh) I'm fine without a wipe. Ever since being pretty good about clean shorts and using BodyGlide, nothing close to a saddle sore (like 1.5 years now). It's hard to believe that I used to put up with them from time to time.
