A few weeks ago I was going to go riding for the first time since September or October. It was just prior to the official start of Spring, and the D.C. area was experiencing some unseasonably warm weather. This would have been the official start of my second 'season' of riding. I was all set to go when I run into technical difficulties with my new clipless pedals. This is when I believe I pissed off the fates. Instead of immediately putting my old pedals with the toe clips back on the bike, I said to myself, "Well, I'll take care of this on Monday and go riding next weekend..." In fact, I did take care of it sometime that following week, but the weather wasn't really what it was that first week. When the weather was 'iffy' at best, other occurrences in my personal life kept me off the saddle.

::: Disclaimer - I'm about to describe some fairly personal, fairly embarrassing, and fairly disgusting medical procedure I had done. It's not too bad or anything, I'm just warning you.:::

Last weekend I had decided that this upcoming weekend (Sunday, at least) looked promising. However, at the same time I needed to get to the podiatrist because on my right heel was some sort of sore I feared was some sort of infection. I figured I'd go to the doctor and get it drained or something. Turns out, underneath the skin it was a freaking wart. From there my two options were go with one of the topical treatments, or the more aggressive removal using a laser. I opted for the more aggressive approach figuring that it would essentially be zapped off, and I'd wear a band-aid or something. I was not prepared for what it actually was. Without getting into too many details, what was left on my ankle after the procedure was a hole about the diameter of a nickel, and probably twice as deep. It is healing nicely now, but it's right at the place where the heel of my shoe rubs against it, so I don't believe I'll be riding this weekend. I heal pretty quickly, there is no pain associated with it for now, so I probably could gear up and ride this weekend, but I feel that that would fall under the "Tempting Fate" category, so I'm a little hesitant to do so, for fear of making matters worse.

After seeing so many threads on how great things have been recently for some of the riders on this forum, I've been harboring more than a little resentment. This resentment has entirely been for myself, because I could not help the things in the recent weeks, but I did squander that first weeknd. Misery loves company, so if anybody else has similar stories of rocky starts to their riding this Spring, I would love to hear them.

I did a pretty hard 43 mile ride yesterday, but am a bit tired today so I won't be riding, and it's supposed to be 70 degrees out. That's kinda depressing.

I went through the same thing yesterday. I did a hard ride Wednesday night. Yesterday it was Sunny and 71 degrees and I was scheduled for a very easy flat ride spending the whole ride in the small chainring. I did about 45 minutes of that then decided to just turn it into a full rest day. I hate wasting nice days like that.

Where was the "fairly disgusting" part? Embarrassing? Bah, get over it. You'll be healed and riding before you know it, too.

Maybe I'll go wash my car and go to the LBS and buy another seat.

Plantar warts are fairly common.

Hopefully in retrospect your time off the bike will be recalled as brief in comparison to the way it feels today.

I thought about that actually. I don't have a digital camera, so I would've had to borrow a friend's. I decided that wasn't a question I wanted to ask.

"Hey, could you drive down with your camera so we can take pictures of my nasty foot?"
". . . I don't think I can be your friend any more."

It's almost been a week since I had it taken off. It's about half as deep as it was, but still looks kind of nasty. Still no pain though. This is still very surprising for me. I'm usually good with pain, and I expected a wound like this to hurt at least a little, but I'm not even aware that it's there unless I hit it against something.

I think it will. But it really sucks in the mean time. It doesn't help that my friend just bought a new cannondale (http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/06/CUSA/model-6HR8Y.html) on saturday, and took it to D.C. to see the Cherry Blossoms, and then he proceeds to call me and tell me how cool it was to be riding :(

I think it should be 'good enough' to go out next weekend.
