Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Server issues?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is it me or is this server completely non-responsive half the time? I've tried posting here in the past few days and just threw in the towel. Server just goes into total vapor lock. Often.

Yup. My posting has been cut back 80% over the last few weeks.
Good news to most I guess.
Same. I can't use BF during the peak hours in the evening. Probably reduced bandwidth.

But is anyone paying attention?
Are there moderators here?
From the rampant flaming and incessant juvenile/sophmoric sniping, that would appear to be questionable.

For real...I got "in trouble" by a moderator for posting what Euro had written to me in a PM, which clearly was not against the rules (since it wasn't listed anywhere). Now, you got people sniping, substituting special characters for letter in obscene words (which is clearly against the rules) and nobody says anything. I have all but stopped posting...

I just had severe server issues. Went to a burger joint on the lake and Rachel, our waitress was really slow to take our order and did not change the channel on the TV to the race like I requested.:D

I'd agree. There's no enforcement of ettiquette here whatsoever. Other Forums I particpate on wouldn't tolerate any of the nonsense here. And if they'd ramp up the oversight here, it would be a much more pleasant place.
I can barely post here without some moronic flame war erupting over nothing. It's a bit depressing. Posts like 'Your Cannondale is a piece of s***' get old. How much 7th gradosity can you stand?

And side note, you have to be patient. Joe is working as much as he can to get all the kinks out of the server, in a week or so (I think) we should be going again.
But he will give you a better update

Complaining about bandwidth issues and server issues, without chipping in money to help pay for the bandwidth and server space you're using, is sorta poor form. 'Least I presume that's what the poster was getting at.

So, make this a member only forum and that won't be an issue except Joe won't get any outside support.
There is no problem with making a comment about the forum if you are not a donating member. If joe wanted to make those threads donating members only/the whole forum donation only he would. Even though he has alot to think about he needs that feedback to make sure this forum runs as smoothly as possible.

The way I see it this is very similar to a bike race. If my presence here bothers anyone, all they have to do is speed up and drop my slow ass. Which making this 'members only' for a fee would accomplish. Of course this wouldn't be nearly as vibrant a place with so many participants, but that's up to whoever runs this joint to determine.
It's a free country. So far.
And posting about server issues isn't 'complaining'. It's actually being helpful to the organizers here in my view - and I presume they want to see it run well more than any of us.

The idea that one should pay the site first to get quality second is laughable. It's like "Man this Ford is a real peice of crap; I better buy it so Ford can improve quality with my money." Besides like any website they make money off the "freeloading" traffic through banner ads, sponsored links etc.

I really expected the new server to be a lot faster then the old one. I have been making optimization changes over the last week, each change brings it a bit faster. The big reason for the move is so I can add a 2nd server to the site, I did not have that option at the old host.

You did a vbulletin upgrade at the same time correct? I believe the new version for vbulletin has caused a lot of problems during the upgrade. I wouldn't feel two bad, I know of two sites that had the same initial bugs.

Yeah, I was running a very old and not secure version of vB, the new version should be faster, I need to put in a few indexes and clean up a few tables. But it will get there soon.

Joe, I sympathise with you. Having to change over a server/software is not pretty. But, at least you are doing something about the situation as it comes up. And, whatever you are doing seems to be working, for the most part; I have not had too many problems today.
Remember, people:
This is a huge site...tens of thousands of members. I am a member of a board--a new one--which has currently less than 300 members. I get a "server is busy" message a lot. Since I am a Moderator there, I am surprised the complaints have not landed on me the same way they have for you here! Another board I have been a member of crashed completely when their webhost's server went "down". It has not yet come back on-line, and may not. (Too much data loss, I bet.)
As for vBulletin? It is ful of features, but....it can also be a pain in the..., for users and Admins alike. I have used it at other sites, too. Sometimes, it works fine...where there are techies running the show. Like here at Bikeforums. But, where the Admins are less than expert at running bulletin board software or handling the administration of a website? It can be a nightmare! Very complex software, from what I have been able to find out. Makes for a lot of useful features, but the same flexibility means more things to go wrong. :(
And, how many problems and threads a day being handled by how many Mods? If someone gets away with something they should not, it's because nobody can be everywhere at once. As a Mod on that other site (noting to do with cycling, BTW), I am often the only one "on-duty"...and the board IS still small!
If it were a lot larger, I'd have to "miss" things...I could not humanly keep up. Neither can the staff here.
If you are concerned? Report the "bad" post if you can; I know the command is available, and I think it may need to be made accessible. Let someone know that it exists...it may be the only way anyone can be sure of finding the 'rotten' "tree" (post) in the "forest" (in all the threads and Forums). And, getting the problem "fixed".

This happened about two hours earlier. I just tried it again with the same result.
I was in the Advocacy and Safety forum. I clicked the "click here to start a new thread" and the page opened up to start a new thread. I fill the form out and select "Submit New Thread" button.
The new thread attempts to load. After about 23 seconds it would default to:

What's the objection toward ads?
I did not pay money to lose the ads. I can ignore them with the best. I paid money because I really like this forum and feel Joe is doing a good job and deserves support from those who use it. Losing the ads though was and is a pleasant bonus. That said, if money was required for membership, I would drop this forum like a bad habit.
On another forum long ago somewhere else out in the internet ether, one guy was whining about the request made of small donations to keep the operation running smoothly. Obviously he was as clueless as I was about the nuts and bolts part of all this stuff. He felt that the request was nothing but a way for the site owner to line their pockets. His argument was the advertisers pay enough. He should get it free. I felt then and still do, these sites are like magazines. If you like them, you subscribe. So what if the owners are making a fat wage. They are providing something I feel is worth the price I pay.
Now that I am marginally more experienced and knowledgable, I realize that to serve a larger membership and keep the site functioning above a crawl, money has to be spent on stuff to keep up. And that keeping a site like this running is quite a responsibility with many headaches. Of which, whining members has to rank right up there near the top. And so there is no mistake, 531 Aussie, I do not mean you. And BTW, Steel rules, Alloy drools!

I don't have that little star because I feel $25 for a forum only site is a little steep. I feel if they lowered it to a more realistic $10-12 there would be a lot more stars here and overall more money contributed but I could be wrong.IMO it is the best bike forum around. That said, I don't want to be a free loader because I value the site, so I contributed $10-12 a few months ago (can't remember exact amount) for my share. I'm not interested in the red star and the status it provides. BTW I also find the site pretty slow and almost impossible to post. Don't know if this post will ever make it as at this point it has been turned back 5 times (and counting)

I will contribute, the wealth of knowledge and friendship obtained is priceless and I feel that $25 is well worth but I hate to come right in behind that and say that and say that I wont donate until I can post without getting "this page cannot be displayed" or it just sitting there with half my status bar full for 10 minutes but I guess I am really saying that lol. Sorry, Im sure it will get fixed or should I say faster. I think with all this broadband hoopla and everyone wanting there info to be there a nanosecond after the mouse is clicked is what causes all the *****ing. If ya cant surf, you aint surfin. Hey, I too like to completely review, the Road Cycling, Health and Nutrition and General Bike Discussion in 10 minutes and get back to work as well.
I operate a Vbulletin driven forum as well and you convinced me not to upgrade to 3.5.4. Good luck, Joe. Hope you can get it all figured out.
Strange. I can respond to threads. I even answered a PM. I can't start a new thread no matter what I try to do. I've seen some new ones started since I started trying so it might be related to the connection. I've tried to start a new thread in the Road forum several times for the past 5 hours. Every time I get a time out and a page not found error. I can't figure it out. I'll try again now on the land line and see if that makes a difference.
Nope. It doesn't like the dial up any better. I guess I'll just spend some time riding instead of writing. Take care.
The forums have been incredibly slow since the server change. 50% or more of the time pages won't load at all. Much slower than before when it does work. It took me 1/2 an hour to get into this thread.
I have a new top of the line computer running on cable and I'm having all sorts of problems with timeouts, pages taking forever to load, repeatedly having to hit the reload, etc., etc. It's ridiculous!
