Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I received one of these with my Dura-Ace ST-7800 shifters. I didn't install it as I didn't know what the heck it was. I figured it was an indicator of some sort to tell me what gear I'm in. I can see in this picture that it is apparently installed on the cable for the rear derailleur.

Am I correct that this is what it's for? Should I install it?

Yes.

Uhhh, if you want to easily know what gear you're in, yeah. There's really no downside.

People sell them on ebay too. Maybe you can get 5 bucks for it if you don't want it.
