Heard this from a pro giving advice to the 5s last week-end.

If you need wheel support, pull off to the right
Remove the offending wheel
Hold up left hand if you need a front wheel, right hand if you need a rear.

Sounds reasonable, but I'd never heard it anywhere before.
Well except for the left arm, right arm thing it makes sense.
Only really works if the wheel support is on the same page, which is not always a case.

In the heat of battle, no one pays any attention to which arm you have up in the air. They see a guy along the road holding his horn, they know you need something. If they see you frantically ripping your rear wheel off your bike, they get some sense of what you need.

If you flat in the middle of the pack, get yourself safely out of the pack and then try to find the Wheel Van.

support guys would most likely rush you a pair of wheels and its pretty obvious which wheel you need swapped. In most short races though, I see no reason to have spares. If you flat, you are done, nearly impossible to catch back up. Its different for crits though, since you have the free lap.

My team held a race a month back and one guy had a spare tire that was flat. Would have sucked if he flatted to find out that his spare was also flat.
