I've got a Specialized frame that will need a threadless headset. The head tube is about 8 1/2 inches on the outside. How much longer should the steer tube to cover the headset stack height? Not looking to get a used fork, but keep seeing new forks on ebay with 280mm steer tube and that doesn't seem like it would be long enough.

That is more than 11 inches. Should be good enough if you don't need much height for your bars or can use and inverted threadless stem > the normal 73 deg. You need to look at your old riding setup.

My first thought was that was going to be short so I went downstairs and measured a few of my bikes. 280mm would be more than enough for any of my bikes.
