General Cycling Discussion - Great Job

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Thank-you, that took a lot of time and effort and I want to tell ChrisL, Raiyn, Gojohnnygo, MediaCreations, oxologic, willic, Brains, WorldIRC and Max along with the others that took time to do a decent thing how much it is appreciated.

Actually, it was kinda fun posting pointless babble to bump that thread constantly. I see that I've been allowed to keep my posts from that one as well. :D
Seriously though, the board needs more moderators. Nobody who could have cleaned up that rubbish was around when it was posted. I'm going to put my name forward for the job. After all, by virtue of being from this side of the world, I'm often around when most of the others aren't. I only wish I'd thought of all this before last night.

I'm gonna do the same. Im usually up real late on the weekends, parties and all, and I can always check up on the forums after the parties.

I'd do it as well but I get a little too fired up sometimes. As for the other posts they just need a new reply to get his name of the end of the thread no actual posts can be seen.
Nice that someone appreciates us, no problem, and I'm sure we would all do it again
But we obvously need some more moderators based in the European and Asian time zones

Too new here to be a mod, and how did I miss this since I can't write with a pen for a while?

Ron...
A disturbed person calling himself ASS posted some 30 times theother night. All of these posts contained extremely disturbing image attachments -- think of the most disturbing thing you've seen on the Net and multiply it ten times. I noted a half-dozen different images, but I copuldn't look too closely at them, since they were truly nauseating.
This occurred in the early morning hours in North America. Since all of the mods were -- at that time -- in North America, no one had the access to ban ASS or delete his posts until I popped by at about 7:30 am ET.
Chris L, World IRC, MediaCreations and a bunch of other guys [I don't have everyone's name, I don't mean to insult anyone by not mentioning them] had kept a vigil, making sure that a warning message was constantly updated and at the top of the forum index. It was a fine example of community action and cooperation, and everyone deserves a pat on the back for it.
If you're wondering if the images were that bad; yes they were. I should have saved some examples to turn over to the authorities because they certainly fit the legal definition of obscenity.
My understanding of the incident is that it was part of some adolescent prank called "owning," in which someone completely disrupts an on-line community in the interests of destroying that community.

Yes, The images were very disturbing and sick.I was very much afraid a child might view this so everybody at the time did what they could you would have done the same.

To add to Velocipedio's post:
The previous night to Ass's posts, someone calling themselves FBI was posting saying that the forum was in violation of Federal law because of an image that was posted on this forum. After what happened to the forum through the CNN link, I thought I'd delete the picture just to be on the safe side. Then FBI came back on bragging how he now "owned" us. I banned him immediately. He also posted a link to his site where him and another person were discussing us. The other person said in one of his posts on the other site, "wait until they see what I do tomorrow". Maybe not in those exact words but it was obvious they had something in mind. I watched the next day but never saw anything. They hit us late when no moderators where on. I'm only assuming that it was the other person. That site where they were posting is now down.

When I saw that the image of the Al Qaeda website had been taken down, i thought that it was probably the wisest course of action. The person calling himself FBI was an obvious troll. But the thought occured to me that the page, in Arabic, may have contained coded instructions or other genuinely dangerous material.
Throughout all of this mess, the moderators of these forums have acted with wisdom and discretion. Now, let's just hope it is all over.

Chris L for Mod!
By the time I started reading the thread our unwanted visitor had been removed, but it was obvious that Chris and the others (sorry people can't remember your names, but you know who you are) had done a very good job in spoiling their game.

Oxologic deserves a lot of credit for this. He is the one who first put up the "don't view messages by you know who thread". I merely replied by adding instructions on how to add this person to your ignore list without necessarily having to view the images he posted, then a few of us continued to bump the thread so that nobody else would have to see it. It was actually kind of amusing watching some of the pathetic thread titles that guy kept coming up with when he realised nobody was viewing his threads.
BTW, I have now agreed to become a mod. Hopefully I'll be around at times the others aren't there (I am on the other side of the world) so that if these clowns come back, the situation won't drag on for so long.

Welcome to the moderator world man. I too am in this little cult against forum terrorism.
I'd be happy to help out also, I'm frequently up early in the morning, quite late at night and from time to time of the weekends.
If I am working on computer projects, I tend to be sitting on bikeforums all day :D

I think the problem is we need moderators out of the American time zones, ie during the American night and at weekends

HAHA, erm, what I did was just to prevent other kids from viewing it. I'm 16 and I should not be viewing that, anyway that picture was really disgusting.
Chris L, you're humble.
Anyway, it was my duty as a member of this forums to let people know. Furthermore, this is the only forum that I go to. BikeForums rulez, there is nothing better. I like the people here, they are nice and give great opinions. I love to cycle and I just don't want the people in the forums to have a bad day because of that. 1 person with a bad day is a lot better than having many other people down with me.
As for being a moderator, I'll be glad to. We really need moderators to make people's day. I don't mind especially when I'll visit BikeForums everyday, every few hour. One thing is that I really hope there won't be such people causing havoc in the forums anymore. Let us all pray.
