I don't see why it wouldn't work. Chains have only gotten narrower as the number of rear cogs has increased so the rings certainly will fit a 6 speed chain. I don't have any specific knowledge about doing this but I would guess that it would work fine.

Use an 8speed chain and you're golden. (I run the PC-68 by SRAM on 6-8speed freewheels and cassettes without problem)

I suppose. Do LBS's stock them?

Out of curiosity could I put a modern 10 speed Record 53/39 crankset on the same old 6 speed freewheel?

Seems like a bizarre combo, but it'd probably work decently.

But why would you go for 172.5mm cranks, anyway? I thought you rode 177.5 at least.

That will work fine with 6, 7, and 8 speed.

6 lacks some gearing for the downhills.

7 is optimal for speed vs price.

8 has the nicest shifters available and is just as fast as the 7, 9, 10, etc. . .

However the 9 and 10 speed shifting is hyper-sensitive, thus bring about a question of why you would even want to go that route.

SRAM PC 68 chain could be helpful (max 8 speed) because it bridges the compatibility between 6 and 8 quite easily with no errors. A Campy 8 speed chain is also very good. Avoid the Shimano/KMC chains because they eat gears.
