Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The special just ran on Fox and Lance was announced as Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Look for the very cool looking cover on this week's issue.
It's about time!!

That's pretty cool, especially coming from what is essentially a stick & ball mag.
Thats totally superb twofold....
One, because he deserves it...
and the other, because it sticks like a bloody thorn into the sides of those idiots who claim that cycling is not a real sport!
Bite on that one baby!!!
Lance won the Dirty Douathlon yesterday too.

Thanks, its been a tough year, but knowing I'm supported and appreciated by my peers makes it all worth while.
You like me. You really like me.

Awesome.
Does this mean that cyclists will now get a little more respect?

although i've never liked SI b/c it's just sports that are boring to me - baseball, golf, some football, hockey, ... all the mainstream sports and lots of hype.
but it is telling that THIS type of magazine for this type of audience will have Lance on the cover. it's gotta be good for the image of cycling when joe bubba baseball and daryl painted-face football fan all see cycling right in front of their faces in their magazines!
although i still don't think cycling will ever be a popular sport in the US... heck, it's not even very popular here in Germany, massively overshadowed by soccer and Formula 1. i went to the "6 tage rennen" 6-day track race last month in munich (it was cool!) which has been held for like 60 years or something and it's in danger of closing next year (there's an old black and white German movie about bike racers in the 6-tage rennen and a guy who dreams of racing and tells a girl he's in the race to impress her and somehow he gets mixed up with the real racer who gets hurt and he proves he IS an excellent cyclist). anyway, it's in danger of shutting down from too few spectators so not enough money. the stadium was maybe 3-5% full on opening day:( now, France or Spain...ahhh...
Guess I'll just have to go out and buy a copy. I'll place this next to my one other issue of SI --- the 1989 one with Greg as Sportsman of the Year. :)
Is it on the news stands now? I went to Barnes and Noble during lunch and couldn't find it. This is what was on display.

Ron, I don't know what issue that is but in this link it says Dec. 16, 2002 issue.

I think at that a magazine like SI, which is mostly devoted to hockey, baseball, football, basketball puts LA on the cover. Maybe it won't make cycling as popular as it is in Europe - not overnight- but it will probably do some good. It'll show the rest of the dumb North Americans that being an athlete doesn't mean you have to be a huge football player, and that yep, cyclists are athletes too. Not like LA is a shrimp like Bettini, but here in north america, the image of an athlete is that of a big huge hulking football player.
