General Cycling Discussion - Cycling's new image?

I received the latest sale catalog from REI on Friday and saw two interesting ads -- not the products but the cyclists.
Are the cyclists shown in the ads below (notice the "artwork") at the forefront of something new in cycling? Will many/most cyclists in the near future "look" like these cyclists? What are they proclaiming?

I'm guessing they're proclaiming to the world, in their own distinctive way, "I am a cyclist!!"

To me a "tattoo" was simply the image of chain oil on my ankles

Tatoos are so mainstream now...

I refuse to get one, so I can be different!

I have no tats, but was thinking about a bicycle ear-ring? Too much?

I haven't seen that many cyclists with a tat, other than bike messengers.

But now that I think about, on yesterday's ride I did see two cyclists and one runner with a tat.

They are very common here in the LA area...and not just the tough guys. Grandmas and grandpas. Lawyers and bankers. 16 year olds at my son's high school...

About 13 years, I got a tatoo of my NFL team's logo. I was 44 years old at the time. Since then I've grown up and wouldn't think about doing such now. ;)

A very cool and serious biker girl riding an Orbea showed us her 'Campy' tat at the parts counter yesterday.

I got a map tattooed on my left shoulder back in the mountain bike heydey in the eighties- me and some buds would get lost often, and the tat was a joking reference to 'follow the guy with the map'

Yeah, but who wants to grow up? :D Checking out the goods at various LBS' this weekend, I noticed that probably 50% of the employees were sporting tatoos. I think it's a generational thing, where the under 30 crowd (and the wannabe under 30 crowd) just view tatoos as a means of personal expression. Me, I still hear my Dad's advice (Navy WW2 vet) "just think what it will look like when you're my age and things start to sag." :eek: Well, I'm his age now and I'm glad I took his advice!

My one tat is the classic drunk in port story. Only I was a truck driver. In 1977, we landed in San Diego and after safely delivering our load, we had to take a lay over. Of course the first thing we did was find the longest strip of bars and hoochie coochie joints we could find. After a few hours of lubricating, we staggered by a tatoo parlor. I staggered in and 20 minutes later staggered out with a tat on my back. I am grateful I cannot see it now. Because what I had put on seems so stupid now. An Earthworm wearing a tophat and smoking a stogie. My wife chuckles almost everytime she sees it. So, I get laughed at quite a bit.

i was looking through a Trek catalog a while ago and there was a clean-cut looking guy on a expensive road bike with the Crass logo tattooed onto his forearm
