I wont ride a bike brakeless. Personal preference.
I try to avoid obvious safety hazards...

so what cheap brakes would you suggest for dirt?
people dont ride dirt breakless for usually atleast one of these two reasons
1. holding breaks helps nosedive into landing
2. close together jumps + no breaks = no time to bail out of going off

Does holding the brake really work when the bikes weigh so little? I've heard of that for motorcycles, but if the whole bike's only like 30lb does it make much difference?

You don't even need to hold the brake. A light tap is more than enough to get the job done, but it's not like you can't do it without brakes, anyway.
