I was wondering what the compatibility issues (if any) are in using a 9 speed narrow chain in conjunction with an older 7 speed Ultegra Cassette?

A 9 speed chain link is narrower than an 8 or 7 speed link. The chain has a tendency to bind up on the chainrings and causes chain suck like you wouldn't believe.

Hope this helps

Shimano HG 9 speed cog width is 1.78 mm and HG 8 speed cog width is 1.85mm. I don't think it's an issue even with a shimano chain unless you have IG 8 speed stuff with a cog width of 2.35mm I have run worse mismatches with no consequences.
